It’s was frustrating for Cowboys fans to watch their team stand pat during the free agency frenzy that saw big-name players land huge deals with new clubs. But Jerry Jones and company seem to have stuck to their guns with a different strategy: kicking the tires on veteran guys- even players with injury concerns- and seeking out relative bargains.

Eric Berry and Malik McDowell, both visited The Star in Frisco on Tuesday. Each would come with sizable question marks and depend heavily on a note from a doctor, but at least one Cowboys legend thinks the front office is playing it smart with the value-shopping, fixer-upper approach. Michael Irvin is on board with improving the team through minor tweaks rather than big splashes.

In an interview with ESPN Dallas 103.3 [KESN-FM], the Hall of Fame wide receiver claimed that breaking the bank in free agency isn’t usually worth the cost.

“Trust me… not very often does the price [teams] pay match up with what they get when you go into free agency,” Irvin said. “It just doesn’t work well all the time. Unless you’re going after a unique talent- like a Deion Sanders- that you can set out on an island to shut down one side of the football field… The price rarely matches the talent you get. It sounds fun and gets everybody hyped because they got a new name, a big name that gets everyone thinking about next year. But it rarely happens.”

Irvin’s comments came before Baltimore’s signing of safety Earl Thomas, a player who many in Cowboys Nation had coveted. But Berry, a five-time Pro Bowler, would offer veteran leadership and a high level of play, if and when healthy. The difference, though, is he would likely do it at a substantial savings when compared to the massive contract (four years, $55 million with $32 million guaranteed) signed by Thomas during the first week of new league year.

“Well, we keep saying they’re not trying to improve in free agency,” Irvin continued. “They’re just not trying at the beginning when the prices are at their peak. Those players are going to fall off. The Cowboys have to pay the guys they have. I wouldn’t swap out anyone in free agency for what the Cowboys have right now… That doesn’t mean they can’t go out and get guys who would be a good value later on. That’s what the Cowboys are looking for. It’s not that they don’t want anybody; they’re just looking for the right value because of all the guys they have to take care of in-house.”

That’s a strategy that DeMarcus Lawrence, Dak Prescott, Amari Cooper, and Ezekiel Elliott can probably get behind.
