Over the weekend, we looked at the possibility of the Dallas Cowboys trading up, back into the first round they vacated when they acquired WR Amari Cooper midseason 2018. It’s an expensive proposition indeed as the Seattle Seahawks, a team which has bailed on the first round four times in seven years, seemed like the highest slot (No. 21) Dallas could get to. It would be a monumental cost to do so, giving up four picks in total to get one in return.
That cost would obviously include Dallas’ 2020 first-round pick and there are more reasons to think Dallas wouldn’t give that pick up than there are reasons to think they would. Still, as with every mock draft, the point isn’t to predict what will happen, but rather to sift through the results for every scenario. In that vein, there are benefits to mocking Dallas trading up, as we did in this exercise.
We used Fanspeak’s On the Clock Simulator to run through just such a scenario, working with Draftplex’s big board for ourselves along with multiple big boards in use by the other 31 teams.
While not the jump to No. 21, there was still a hefty price to pay to make it into the back-end of first round. Is it worth it? Only when the target works out to be a regular Pro Bowler. Would the target we traded up for be that kind of player? Find out through either the gallery or follow the jump for the full writeups.
