The first thing people have to consider is this; we have 4 compensatory picks coming our way in the 2014 nfl draft. You can't trade compensatory draft picks.

We used our 6th round draft pick and traded it for a player and a 7th round draft pick.

We traded Rosario and Lissemore for 7th round draft picks.

That's a lot of movement, and I couldn't begin to tell you how many picks we have. Not sure if we had our original 7th rounder or not, but I digress.

I found it ironic that people were complaining about trading down from the 6th rounder, when we've been able to more than supplement that pick.

We probably would have cut Rosario and Lissemore, they were already on the bubble. We got value for them. And it isn't to say we're going cheap as a couple people alluded. But rather you can use those 7th rounders for a number of things. I think we took a cap hit on trading Lissemore, but it should open things up next year where we won't have his 1.4 million on the books.

1) Going after players that you would normally have to fight for as UDFAs.
2) The actual picks we have (non-compensatory) we can use to trade up in some of those mid rounds. Say you want someone in the 4th, but you have to move up a couple spots to get him. Those 7th round draft picks will come in handy. Also could let us jump back into the 6th round if we want.

These are smart moves by our front office. When they mess up everyone acknowledges is, but when they do a good job? You still try to smack them down. It's small of you.

Great post. This is how organizations like the Patriots do things. We are actually using planning and foresight not just living for today

Yes, I agree with your comments but I am not certain what any of that does for 2013-2014. I want to win now, with a relatively young Romo. Ain't seeing the love for this "win now" attititude. We have been waiting 17 years for a real chance at post season success. These 7th rounders may be great three years from today but I am watching now!! and Jerruh, no matter that your brain is 40 years old, the rest of you looks older than a Sequoia.

I thought compensatory picks were awared right before the draft?

I think they come from hope and prayer. I don't expect any picks to be awarded for the low-end players players that Dallas lost.

Really showing how uneducated you are.

The picks are awarded in a formulaic manner. And while the exact formula is unknown. There is a lot of analysis showing we are due somewhere along the lines of 3 to 4 picks.

Got any links to this?

With Butler and Coleman being lost for the year, that will affect their impact as they will get no playing time. I still think they will get picks but 2 or 3 is more realistic than 4 and their likely to be all 6th or 7th rounders.

Well they haven't been awarded yet so we don't know for sure. But it looks promising.

We need guys like Mike Jenkins and Felix Jones to play a ton for their new teams this year and we may get another 4th round comp pick or maybe two out of them walking away.

Would love to see them move some (or all) of the 3 picks that we traded for to 2015, since we will probably have those compensatory picks. If you want to start having as many picks as the Pats, this would be a good start cause a 2104 7th is probably a 2015 6th. Start trading them, and since Jerry likes to trade anyway, shouldn't be hard for JG to talk him into it.

Maybe one day, I know its a dream, we could actually get a high compensatory pick.

I thought I read somewhere that because we traded Lissemore, there is no cap hit. I could be wrong.

Heck yeah. Besides three 7s is a decent hand. :)

You're right. People may consider 7s as small change but all draft picks are gold. Sure they're smaller pieces but starters and contributors come from there, too.

Never turn income down.

So we have 12 picks, what did that get us the last time we had that many? Realistically, what do you expect from a 7th rounder? Unless these picks are used to package them in trades for 3-4th rounder, these picks are nothing. I just don't see the need to stockpile 7th round picks. Stockpile 3-5th round picks.
