My bad, sorry about that. I had read somewhere that he weighed 250. My head hangs with shame. :(

edit: Although, the 40 was apparently 4.64, not 4.53. Not that I ever had intended to take away from his impressiveness as a specimen--it's just that 4.53 at 270 seemed too good to be true.

it was 4.53

Not trashing Sidbury, but Veikune is already stronger and better against the run, even at only 257 lbs. Veikune will also get better (and bigger, the guy has barely any fat on him), he has only been a starter one year (even though he was a stud pass rushing specialist his Jr year). Veikune also has better instincts/ability in coverage (despite his slower 40) and better pass rushing technique.

My biggest fear re Sidbury is not drafting him, but drafting him on the first day. He is a true project.

I would be happy with David Veikune. You are right, and he was your guy, too. He's exactly what the Cowboys need, imo. I'd take Veikune at 51.
It wouldn't surprise me if the Rams took Sidbury.

Can't take credit for that find, lots of guys were aware of him. This is a pretty savvy board. But I hope the Cowboys draft that kind of player: hard working, productive, team oriented, physical, instinctive & nasty.

I just want football players, measurables should only support the actual play, not displace it. I will take the proven playmaker over the athletic freak any day.

Your being modest. I'm sure other guys were aware of him. I was aware of him, too. However, you were the one guy (I recall) that stated a strong argument for him. It was good, because I remember it. He is more of a power guy, and I'm partial to the faster guys. Bunting says that Veikune's first step is quick and deceiving. He has some finesse to his game, too

You were on Jason Williams fast, too.

"Am I the only one who sees Jason Williams"?

Just giving credit, where it is due.

Edit:

I still like Sidbury. His level of competition is a question, and you could ask him why he only had 6.5 sacks going into the last game, where he got 4 in one game. He does have upside and has a chance to make it because of his measurables. If he gets a little stronger and learns his technique, he could be tough to block in the NFL. That is why his stock is going up so fast.

If you look at the only two LBs we've drafted since Wade got here, that's the profile they fit. Neither Spencer nor Walden were great athletes. One was just strong and productive, and the other one was productive and gutsy while playing with a painful injury.

You can also look at the Alan Ball vs. Courtney Brown debate. Wade wanted the football player; Jerry wanted the whiz-bang workout wonder. We ended up getting both, but it looks like the athlete is on his way out and the football player has made at least a small role for himself.

Not that I'm saying anything against Sidbury, because I'm not. I've never even seen him, so I have no basis to judge. But thus far, we've gone more for production and intensity and savvy than raw athletic ability. Veikune just reminds me of one of those guys.

This draft is gonna be so fun.

I just watched a video of Veikune's pro day. He looked really smooth and quick when going through some agility drills. He looked good flipping his hips in coverage, too. This guy is quick, and he's built like a tank.

I have my fingers crossed that this is the case. If our draft goes heavy towards the athletic freaks w/potential (hate that word, sometimes) I may have a meltdown.

The Cowboys need productive team guys in the worst way, especially the role players. Their window will not stay open for long, look at the Chargers.

Seriously not being modest. But thanks in any case. This forum is my favorite part of the Zone, and thats due to the posters who frequent this place. We don't always agree, but very knowledgeable guys here.

And I like Sidbury too, just not on the first day. As a 3rd rounder, I would grab him in an instant (unless Veikune was still there too, LOL).

I get a lot of heat for my faves, but how can anyone root against guys who play the game like we were all taught to do since Pee Wee? I am hoping Dallas grabs at least 2 of the 5 try hard guys:
*James Casey
*David Veikune
*Jason Williams
*Mitch King
*Zack Follett

I also like Max, Unger, Barwin, Kruger & Chung for the same reasons_but they are most likely out of reach.

Here is a good article on Veikune. He would be a steal in round 3. He's a 51 target, imo. Bunting ranks him at # 45.

Couple of posters are from Hawaii (Paniolo for sure) so I am sure they know this story. But Veikune has been a favorite since his junior (& senior) year in high school when he made Price's All-Katoosh Team. "Katoosh" is pidgin for a really really hard hit, more like an explosion.

I have my moments

Leon's on the Big Island.

Anyway, as far as Veikune goes, I'd be all for him from the 3rd on up. I'm not as high on him as I was for Travis Laboy when he came out. The difference between the two is that Veikune has been more consistent and injuries have not been an issue. He is also very humble and an extremely hard worker. With Laboy, he was more flashy with an incredible first step. He always was nicked up in some way, shape or form. DV also is much stronger than Laboy and he plays the run MUCH better than Laboy did. I guess I was always in awe of Laboy's first step.

Laboy is a cool name for someone living in Hawaii to have
