Just finished a very interesting interview with Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post and Sports Illustrated. Lombardi worked with the Broncos last year, has good sources with the team and offered these insights on the Cowboys/Broncos workouts:

the Cowboys are a physically impressive team that is pushing Denver around. He said it would take “an impressive effort” for the Broncos to beat Dallas in a regular season game.

– fans should curb their enthusiasm about Adam Jones. He wrote a critical piece on Jones’ woofing yesterday, when he told Broncos WR Brandon Marshall he “was no T.O.” and then watched Marshall beat him repeatedly.

I told him that the Jones I saw in Oxnard was hyper-aggressive, trying to jump every route and being beaten by double moves a lot. He said this was Jones’ game and that fans should disabuse themselves of seeing Deion Sanders Jr. and think of Jones more as a nickel corner. Jones’ real value, Lombardi claimed, would be as a punt returner.

– He said the Cowboys biggest defensive weakness was two minute pass coverage; the Cowboys were one of the worst teams last year in stopping opponents at the end of halves. (Cue Giants flashback here.) Dallas needs a bigger pass rush, in his opinion, to avoid a repeat.

– The biggest offensive question, in Lombardi’s opinion, is the offensive line’s condition. He wants to see if the line can avoid late fades, of the type we saw in the playoff loss to New York.

Not worried.

The guy is coachable so eventually he'll come around with the athletic ability he has.

Its going to take longer than 3 weeks and a preseason game to knock off the rust.

Hes not going to just come in and unseat a player like Anthony Henry just by his presence like so many of you thought.

If he's not going to be Deion after being away from football for a year then we should just cut him.

I can't argue with much of what was said.

I think one of our major strengths is our size, but on offense and defense.

I think the defense would hit the next level when/if a guy like Spencer becomes a legit pass rusher, which could happen as soon as this year. Without that extra rusher, our defense will still struggle at times.

Adam Jones is not himself, but who could blame him after being away for an entire season. I think he will find himself, say somewhere around week 6.

With the Size of the Offensive Line and Barber's Physical Running Style it will be interesting to see if we can beat into Submission opposing defense's in the 4th Quarter.

Then hit them with the speed of Felix and take it to the house.

I'm curious - how many deep routes did Jones get beat on while playing for the Titans. Isn't that what scouts should be evaluating him on? If Lombardi is making the blanket statements on Jones based on watching a few clips of Hard Knocks and a practice with Denver, then maybe he should also say that Champ Bailey is headed for retirement because he can't stay healthy.

Dallas didn't throw out Jones' past NFL experience when they considered trading for him.

Evidently Pac has had some bad practices against the Broncos, because Mickey just got on him and it's a rare event when Mickey says anything negative about a current Cowboy player.

Adam Jones has not played football in over a year, he is going to be rusty, he is going to have bad habits that he has to break, I dont know why people are going to expect to see Deion Jr. He is going to be fine, but its going to take time, but last year we had J. Revees (sp) and Nate Jones playing. I wil take A. Jones now over both of them.

I guess everyone noticed Campo saying on Hard Knocks that Pac was still freelancing on his footwork at times. I hope he doesn't think he can do it "his way" and make up for it with talent, because he can't. He needs to drill and drill and drill and get it right.

Edit, I just read the other thread where you mentioned this... Seems like Mick said almost exactly the same thing.

Agreed. Look at Tank Johnson last year. After his reinstatement, he didn't have an immediate impact. Infact, we didn't see the benefit of his abilities until later in the season.

NOW, with a full off-season of conditioning and workouts under his belt, Tank is looking better than ever. I think the same will happen with Adam Jones, if not sooner.

It's likely he won't be covering the Brandon Marshall's of the league to begin with anyway. If he plays, it'll likely be against 2nd/3rd or 4th WRs where, even with the rust, he should have a skill advantage.

Jacques Reeves and Nate Jones have been replaced by better players, and hopefully both starting corners won't be banged up.

I'm confident that when the game is on the line, the nickel D will be much better.

I think the two minute thing is a Wade Scheme problem. When Wade was first hired, San Diego fans mentioned about his style of D in those situations. And Pacman will be fine, still have three more preseason games...but hey Henry looked really good last week. He looked pumped up, dont think he is ready to be moved to the bench yet.

well that offered nothing of substance and the common fan already knows all that.

I am curious does lomabardi have a report on Tampa, green bay and new englands offensive line, cause they didnt look like they were in condition to play at all when they played the giants.

Or maybe lombardi is just filled with talking points that everyone else throws around.

He used to have his own blog, but now he's part of this new blog site with former NFL personnel men. Anywho, he writes about all of the NFL, so it's possible he's observed the other teams, too.

If you're curious, here's a link. http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/author/mike-lombardi/
