Conventional wisdom in the Metroplex has congealed around the idea that Jerry Jones' gag order has diminished head coach Wade Phillips. See here and here for examples.

I'm wondering how many of Wade's fellow head coaches are envious?

The NFL requires head men to address the press, and anybody who's endured Phillips' pressers knows he does so grudgingly. The conferences are aural soporifics. Bill Belichick hates them too; he would be thrilled if he could read his dry cleaning receipts at the podium for five minutes and be done. Some will argue that he actually does this, in the guise of "talking football."

You notice Wade was "smiling" when he told the press he had been gagged? Of course he was. No more gotcha questions! No more lectures from beat writers telling him they could coach better then he can. No more questions period! It's like telling an eight year old he no longer has to eat raw vegetables every night with dinner. He can now go straight for the steak and dessert -- prepping the team for games and calling the plays from the sideline.

Take an anonymous poll and see how many other coaches want to be "emasculated" like Wade? I'll bet the number will be pretty high.

I agree with Vela's column other than the fact he seems to think that the opinion of the Dallas Morning News and FWST somehow equals "conventional wisdom".

I agree more with this quote:

I guess you lose any sense of perspective when the word "billionaire" is attached to your name. What Jones can't see is that he's undermined Phillips and his coaching staff at every turn. Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells all brought an aura to one of the most revered coaching jobs in professional sports. In a relatively short period of time, Jones has made the position almost completely irrelevant.

Yup, I can give you 3 million green reasons Wade doesn't care about being emasculated. (Good lord, this is a big part of his retirement account.) Just as well IMO. He never says anything anyway. Seriously, it's no big deal whatsoever. Just coach and win in the playoffs, and all will be well. Yeah, I know easier said than done.

I love the move by Jerry to limit media access to the team. The media members are getting what they deserve.

I wish more of the Dallas media would write as well as Vela.

Amusing how all the haters was saying the team just needs to shut-up and not talk to the media... Now, when Jerry orders it, it is a stain on Wade and undermining the team...

last I checked, Wade wasn't a player

that was the biggest gripe

plus Jerry being so much in the spotlight

So what if he isn't a player... Who knows where the talking was coming from... This is at a time when Dallas is looking at players and the coaches are doing most of the action.

because coaches are supposed to talk to the media

players can, but that is usually post-game

not during the week like TO was doing

Who says the coaches are suppose to talk to the media at the Senior Bowl? Why should the organization talk to the media when they spin it however they want?

because coaches give out information when they talk, they answer questions

players just fly off at the mouth

:lmao2::lmao2::lmao2:

That is what you call, being called out. If that doesn't set Wade on fire to win it all this year then I hope somebody pants him in the new stadium...:laugh2:

The sad part is, Wade probably does welcome it.

Does anyone think that - no matter the circumstances with the team - Jerry Jones would silence Bill Parcells? Can anyone imagine an owner telling Lombardi to zip it?

The entire organization becomes a bigger joke with each passing week. The Cowboys are the Raiders with more revenue.

How many more comical posts are we going to get about BP regarding this?

BP silenced himself.

Jerry learned this tactic from BP.

Jerry would be the only one talking during the off-season every year while BP was here. He wouldn't speak for huge portions of the off-season including at the Senior Bowl. Why? Because nothing a coach gives you there helps the team. The media doesn't need to know which players the team likes in free agency or the draft.

Jerry has simply bought into BP's method. A method many BP protege's use as well including Belichek.

That isn't the point. The point is that if Jones would not get away with doing this to many coaches, save Phillips.

It just speaks to how powerless and sad he is and how little control he has over anything. I don't know why we bother with even referring to him as the head coach. He's the defensive coordinator. We aren't even trying to pretend otherwise.

You're embarrassing yourself, though not as much as Jerry Jones is embarrassing himself.

You think Kraft would silence Belichick? Hardly. That would be Belichick's job. This is an Al Davis move. It's Wade Phillip's job to silence his staff, not Jones'. Except in the Cowboys bizarre world where the owner is the face of the frachise. Something we don't see with any other team, except maybe the Raiders. And in basketball, with the Mavericks.

The Cowboys are a laughing stock. Nothing could've shown that more clearly than the Dan Reeves saga.
