Bill Parcells takes some justified heat on this site for his drafts, which had an up and down quality to them. The ‘03 and ‘05 drafts provided solid players in volume and some standouts, in Terence Newman, Jason Witten and Demarcus Ware. The ‘04 and ‘06 drafts lack the same oomph.

Let’s not make the mistake of viewing these selections in a vacuum. For all the Jacob Rogers and Stephen Petermans, Parcells’ work looks good in contrast to his divisional rivals over that time. Let’s compare Dallas’ pups with New York’s, Philadelphia’s and Washington’s over the last four years and you’ll see what I mean.

GIANTS

Upside — Big hits with DE Osi Umenyioua, guards David Diehl and Chris Snee and S Gibril Wilson.

Downside — traded a mint to get QB Eli Manning, including Philip Rivers, who is arguably a better player. As a result, the Giants had only four picks in ‘05, none of whom are starters. If Manning plateaus this could be their version of the Joey Galloway deal.

Starters from ‘03 through ‘06 — seven.

Early ‘06 report card — had only one consistent starter, in 4th round DT Barry Cofield. 1st rounder Mathias Kiwanuka started the second half after injuries hit the DE position and shows promise. They were the only Giants with more than two starts.

EAGLES

Upside — The Eagles have had success with their high picks, landing L.J. Smith, Shaun Andrews, Mike Patterson and Reggie Brown.

Downside — They’ve been awful in the mid and late rounds most of the time. Smith and DE Jerome McDougle are the only players left from their ‘03 draft. Andrews is the only every-down player from Philadelphia’s ‘04 draft, though FB Thomas Tapeh is decent.

Only ‘05 stands out, when Philly drafted Sean Considine, Todd Herremans and Trent Cole in the middle rounds in addition to Patterson and Brown.

Starters from ‘03 though ‘06 — nine

Early ‘06 report card — The Eagles got A’s in the knee-jerk pundits’ polls, but the class looks like a D today. Only two players, 4th round WR Jason Avant and 5th round LB Omar Gaither started any games. Brodrick Bunkley never got a start and 2nd rounder Winston Justice was inactive for all 16 games. Is he any better a prospect today than Pat McQuistan? 4th round OG Max Jean-Gilles also failed to dress for a single game.

Commanders

Upside — Washington appears to have hit on all its first-day picks in ‘04 and ‘05, landing starters Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley, Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell.

Downside — The Commanders have had only four picks in rounds 1-4 the past two drafts. They have only one pick in rounds 1-4 this year. They had only three overall picks in ‘03 and their one starter, OG Derrick Dockery, left in free agency last month. They had only four overall picks in ‘04 and were fortunate that their first two hit.

Starters from ‘03 through ‘06 — five

Early ‘06 report card — The early results look brutal, because LB Rocky McIntosh was all the Commanders had from the first four rounds and he made just one start. Had 6th round DT Kedrick Golston not surprised, Washington was facing a second draft in four years with no productivity.

COWBOYS

Upside — Pro Bowlers in Witten and Ware and starters in Newman, Julius Jones, Bradie James, Marcus Spears and Chris Canty. Promising part-timers Marion Barber, Patrick Crayton, Jay Ratliff and Bobby Carpenter.

Downside — The ‘04 draft, Jones and Crayton aside, looks like a washout. Jacques Reeves is still around, but has not stepped forward. Canty and Spears regressed in ‘06 and need to get back on track, or the ‘05 draft will look poorer.

Starters from ‘03 through ‘06 — eight

Early ‘06 report card — Bobby Carpenter’s strong play against Seattle probably helped the scouting staff breathe easier. The jury is out on Anthony Fasano and Jason Hatcher, though Hatcher teased some pass rushing skills early. The Cowboys gambled and lost big time on 4th round return man Skyler Green.

If I recall correctly, he's done some small-time journalism in the past. But I don't know what he does as a profession today. I doubt he makes enough off ads to not have to work.

Bradie James is a clown to me. Canty is a fourth rounder..the only thing I can say about him is that he is big. Spears talks a better game than he plays. Parcells got too cute in a couple of this drafts. As far as the Eagles are concerned....they are bringing Winston Justice and Max Jean Giles EXACLTY how they planned it. You watch...they will be starters for them very soon. They had an abundance of picks and they know how long it takes for OL to develop. They are developing WITHOUT having to suffer through the rookie mistakes. While we are out giving out 9M to Rivera...16M to Davis..and 5M to Kosier....for GUARS people...at the end of the day these are still guards and is is mind boggling the kind of money we have dumped into guards.

What's wrong with spending that kind of money on a guard?

You cannot be serious? Would much have had Rivera or Peterman or GUrode or any of these other clowns we have tried at guard work out...then we could have THROWN that kind of money at a REAL impact player and position...perhaps Adalius Thomas...then we would not have to rely on the unknown to be a bookend to DeMarcus Ware...if Ware were paired with Thomas our defense would be unstoppable

We had the money to go after A. Thomas if we had wanted to.

So, again, what's wrong with spending the money on guards?

from what I recall neither of their picks got any kind of favorable buzz during their training camp. that and being inactive all 16 games would frankly make me ask a few questions (look how many screamed about Carpenter here).
I wanted Giles because I thought of him as a prototypical road grader. But he is beginning to look like another Peterman. we shall see this year. If no positive buzz comes out after training camp this year, then it looks bad.

FYI, Canty was a 1st round prospect that slipped to the forth round due to injuries and character questions. Skill wise/ability wise, he was a first round prospect.

we can keep going on and on about they hype these players genereate...but I think Hatcher is and/or will be better than both Spears and Canty....it is pretty hard to play as many snaps as both of those guys have and generate so little push to the QB. Ratliff has done a better job with providing pressure. Look, I am as a big a Cowboy fan as there is, but I call a spade a spade. Spears and Canty to this point are all hype.

I said the "kind" of money we spent on a guard...I guess you will see what is wrong with that when we have to re-sign Terrance Newman and extend Tony Romo

...trying not to beat a dead horse here, but what happened to the Marcus Spears Tuna thread?

Just curious, as Cold Pizza just reported that he said he was close to asking for a trade...and I hadn't heard that yet. He's kinda starting to get on my nerves (if true). What a whiny b****. I was a big fan of this guy one year ago.

I hadn't heard anything about that either. If he is asking for a trade I think I'd have to agree with your assesment.

Hard to answer this one critically. At least we have players there although the cost is staggering. Hopefully we will have room to draft some OL to develop.

Is there some kind of problem? Does the 2005 cap somehow effect the 2008 cap? I'm not understanding what your complaint is. Are we not going to have room to sign Newman and Romo to long-term contracts? If not, can you tell me why not? How much cap space will we have? How much would it take to re-sign them?

We spent what we had to to get these guys. It's not like we're in cap trouble. When we resign TNew the cap will go up again. We're not paying these guys outrageous amounts that are out of line with the going rate.

:hammer:

We are also CURRENTLY 12 mil under the cap. If a guy like Thomas was on our radar he would have been brought in. Obviously, the Cowboys FO agenda isn't the same as some fantasy/Madden players out there. How peculiar.

I don't even think we will even keep T-New...He is already 29 years old...(or Henry, for that matter, he IS 30)

Newman will have a monster year because he will get interceptions that Phillips' schemes' creates when the opposing qb's makes stupid mistakes in front of pressure, not to forget than Jerrah LOVES to give big paydays to players who perform well in the last year of thier contract. (Bradie James, anyone?) Newman knows this, and will play like gangbusters. (even better than previous years)

If Newman has such a year, Jerrah may not be able to keep Romo and Newman and thier large impending contracts.

Right now we're 12.5 million under the cap. Say around 11 after rookie signings. The cap's going up again next year. I seriously doubt that those two guys are going to take that much cap room to get resigned.
