Very few teams have good offense and defense this year

I really think that is a huge difference maker. Where I think we have the potential to be better than our 2007 offense, and our 2009 defense. I think most of the other top tier teams are top tier because of their offense or because of their defense. Go down the list, and you can really tell.

Most teams with premier offenses, not only do they not have a premier defense, their defense tends to be pretty average or sub par, and vice versa.

Dallas is the only team in the League with a top five offense and defense.

The only other team that has both components in the top 10 are the Lions.

The team the Cowboys play this weekend is only 12 yards/per game more or less in both categories.

Not sure i buy into the idea that Cowboys are only team with a top offense and defense. Ravens, Greenbay, Chargers, just a few that come to mind that play well as a team.

As much as i love the defense, we have to see how they play with a lead. Teams that have explosive offenses tend to give up more yards on defense because the opposing offenses have to open it up more.

edit: Just noticed after looking at the standings, Cowboys combined opponents record 6-3, Detroits 2-7

We're 3 games in...
So those games don't count?

I agree that we are a good team 3 weeks in and can only get better.

Beat the Lions!

Yeah, and we have a ton of key players hurt. I cannot wait for the bye week to get here, get somewhat healthy, and then see what we've got against New England.

I agree, I think that is our statement game of the year. I would love to beat Detroit, have the Pats lose to the Raiders, and then beat the Pats. It would key to the media as a true changing of the guard.

By the way the final four last year consisted of

Bears Jets Packers Steelers

Bears 30th ranked offense, 9th ranked defense
Jets 11th ranked offense 3rd ranked defense
Packers 9th ranked offense 5th ranked defense
Steelers 14th ranked offense 2nd ranked defense

Of the top 10 offenses last year, 5 of them went to the playoffs
Of the top 10 defenses last year, 6 of them went to the playoffs

*Chargers we're first in offense and defense, yet did not go to the playoffs. They lost too many division games (3).

The Chargers' downfall last year was special teams... they had several punts blocked in key situations. Along with our offense and defense being solid I really like what we're doing on special teams. I've seen enough of Bailey at this point to not worry about finding a kicker. McBriar is, well, McBriar. Buehler should give us a lot of touchbacks. And our coverage units have been outstanding. This team is solid all the way around.

Nothing close to what I posted.

Why do people keep saying we have a top 5 defense but don't factor in points per game?

Because official offensive and defensive rankings are based on yardage, not points.

My post was the one in your quote box. Guess your meaning went over my head.

My bad, didn’t realize i did that. Either way i don’t disagree with anything you said.

:laugh2: I don't know if he'll agree with it, but that is as clear cut a response as you can ask for.

ST's blew a punt against the jets or we'd likely be 3-0 right now. That said, I think ST's is greatly improved this year so far. That play was a fluke and not the norm so I think we may have among the better ST's in the NFL as the year progresses as well.

We all need to keep the Lions game in perspective, we lost our starting LG for a few games and have a few rookie or young linemen playing. Romo is beat up and we're missing a few key players on offense. There is a good chance our offense will struggle big time because of this against a good defense. That does not mean the offense sucks. We need them to get through this game healthy so they can return to form after the bye.

The defense should get better all year. I can't wait till we get Hatch and Scandy back.

Our issues are all about health, imo. I don't don't if we'll be able to overcome it as the year drags on. The good news is the team is really being patient rehabbing guys so when they do come back, they should be 100%.

It's early but things look good if we can get healthy, imo.

I thought the texans had the number 1 defense?
