Wanted to gift this to the Zone for anyone who wants to actually watch the players film instead of listening to media grades on him. Breakdown starts at 7:00

Watched Schoonmaker’s Michigan career highlights pass catching tape. He gets downfield and has good hands. Runs really good crossing routes. Don’t understand why he didn’t come out in the 2022 draft. You see his speed and athleticism better in 2021 season. He reminds me of Shultz with more speed.

That’s one thing I didn’t see in his film, “downfield” routes. Virtually every catch I saw him make was with 10 yards of the line if scrimmage. Given his speed, I was surprised that Michigan didn’t use him more vertically.

You gotta look at his tape from 2021. Patterson was his quarterback then. His blocking is top notch.

In this film alone he has 3 plays in the first 20 minutes where he's open for big gains. QB play and pass blocking really hurt on all 3. I'm sure there's a lot more if I saw 3 in less that 25 plays.

He has the tools to be a good tight end. Like Mazi Michigan’s scheme left lots to be desired.
There's no doubt I like what I see in the small samples I've had time to watch. His blocking is outstanding and a lot of that has to do with his leverage skills. He's getting under the pad level of the defender and causing them to lose any ability to shed a block. That will 100% translate to the NFL. I see speed and quickness in his routes as well, especially at the point of attack or route break. I'd be licking my chops as an OC right now considering what we already have on offense.

with a bit more speed possibly but for sure better blocking. His RAS score says hes their bets prospect since weve drafted since 82Witt..not saying the will be Jwitt but saying there's reason they drafted schoon he may beat out Furgeson and Hendershot for the starter snaps game 1..

One thing I liked in the film I’ve seen of him is he has a good feel for zone coverage. He doesn’t run into coverage. He finds a space and slows down.
That's what made Witten great. He understood how to get open. Few tight ends are the fastest player on the field. Few break out of their routes faster than a DB can. The best understand how to sell their routes, how to find soft spots, how to use their body to create separation, etc. I think Schoonmaker has some things to learn in that regard, but he also has some things already in place to build on.

The Cowboys appear to really have issues with Schultz. I wonder what happened behind the scenes.

Agree
I think he has a high ceiling and if he can perfect those little things he could be good. Schultz got better each year and I think this kid could too and be a more athletic player than Schultz was
