After the smoke has cleared, it would seem that Greg Ellis and perhaps Bobby Carpenter might be provided their walking papers if these rookies perform at Camp. Any projections on who will be sent packing before the season begins?

The usual suspects are the starters on the ST units. Every one of them are going to fighting for their jobs: Justin Rogers, Deon Anderson, Courtney Brown, Pat Watkins, etc.

courtney brown

battle

pat watkins

justin rogers

rodney hannah

Pat Watkins, Alan Ball, Courtney Brown, and Justin Rogers should all be nervous right now.

Meanwhile, despite the fact that Marcus Spears, Jason Hatcher, and Stephen Bowen will become Unrestricted Free Agents next year, we did not draft a Defensive Linemen. That puts pressure on us to re-sign them since they know we have no replacements for them.

All the DBs who have done nothing for a couple years. Ball, Watkins, Brown, Battle. Then theres Rogers and Carpenter.

I was really down on the draft as it unfolded but now after seeing it all, I'm somewhat excited that alot of stiffs that have been taking up roster space and doing nothing will be gone. I hope all these guys make the team and we start off in the new stadium with a young, hungry team and a new attitude.

"You're getting way ahead of yourself, boys. This is just another mining camp."

The 2006 draft looks to be on its way to bust status, only Hatcher remains free of scolding critique.

Just as 2004 was a complete flop a part from Crayton and the now departed erratic Julus Jones.

2003, 2005 and 2008 were bonanzas however.

2007 still has the jury out on it but so far the reviews are mixed.

So in the rebuilding phase that started in 2003 Dallas has scored grades of:

2003- A
2004- D
2005- A+
2006- D
2007- C
2008- A
2009- ?

Much better than the previous era of 1994 to 2002 that produced:

1994: C (Only Larry Allen saved it from a D)
1995: D
1996: C
1997: C (Dexter Coakley saved a D)
1998: B
1999: C ( Dat Nguyen saved a D)
2000: F
2001: F
2002: C (It started with promise but now only Gurode remains of a talented but troubled draft class)

Getting rid of Ellis, a consistent 7-8 sack guy, makes no sense, especially if we have better depth and can spot him even more. Now somebody like Anthony Spencer, who has shown absolutely nothing in two seasons and makes first-round money, would make sense as a guy you dump if he doesn't show tremendous progress.

I thought that was a little strange also. Especially not drafting a NT.

I think the team will experiment with Spears as NT and let Bowen or Hactcher start in his spot on certain plays.

Once the last of the big three nose tackles (Ron Brace) was gone, there wasn't anyone else who I thought was worth a draft pick.

I wouldn't venture a guess, but these draft picks were all taken in the 3rd round and later, so not a single rookie is guaranteed a job either...they could all make it or all get cut.

Camp isn't going to be just about getting in shape...there are going to be some real battles for jobs....I like it.

from what i was reading, the 3-4 DL talent was very poor in this draft.

maybe they wanted jarron gilbert?

other than him, there weren't many 3-4DEs available.

you look at the teams that were moving to the 3-4 defense, and they didn't take dlinemen other than at the top.

Carpenter will need to play the nickel/dime LB spot. He has competition before and after the draft. But I think they will give him a chance. Rookies take time to train. We'll see.

While I appreciate your respect for Ellis, there is no way they are giving up on Spencer. The fact we drafted LBs speaks more to the position and need in the 3-4 than the abilities of the LBs here esp outside.

If an OLB comes along and they can replace Ellis they'll do so. Ellis and Spencer will fight for the starting SOLB spot.

Spencer has 4.5 career sacks. If he is outplayed by Butler and Williams in camp and preseason, he's probably gone. I don't think much of Spencer, so I think this is a possibility.
