Entering 2023, there are several veteran players who need to step up their performance this summer or face the prospect of being cut. In my book these are the veterans squarely on the cut bubble:
  • Kelvin Joseph- as he enters his 3rd season, KJ has been a major disappointment. His play on STs has been very good but as a 2nd round pick he should have already been a starter. When Anthony Brown went down last year, he had his opportunities but was far less than reliable. DeRon Bland has passed him and so has versatile Israel Mukamu. And the addition of Stephon Gilmore makes even more in danger of the cut knife. The physical skills are there but the bust clock is ticking.
  • Jabril Cox- drafted in the 4th round two years ago, Cox was seen as a steal. Two seasons later, Cox has been a disappointment. His pass coverage skills were supposed to be his strength but he has not shown enough to be reliable. DeMarvion Overshown is now the young LB with more raw talent than Cox. Like Joseph, he’s on a very short leash.
  • Neville Gallimore- unlike the previous two players mentioned, Gallimore he has earned some decent playing time. Going into a contract year, he’s been ok just not good enough to warrant a second contract. The drafting of Mazi Smith underscores that.
  • Jourdan Lewis- Lewis has been a very good player for several years. His foot injury last year ended a good season early for him But he’s more expensive and the development of Israel Mukamu has made him a bubble guy in my book.
  • Jalen Tolbert- early reports from OTAs has Tolbert being greatly improved. Last year was a complete disappointment for a guy drafted in the 3rd round. He cannot afford another bad TC.
Who else? Who’s on your list of guys in danger of a visit from the Turk this year?

I pretty much agree with your list.

But I do think Cox takes a larger role in the defense this year.

I feel like Gallimore and possibly Cox are the only ones in danger.
Cutting Bossman would be silly you need CB depth.
Tolbert seems premature, we’ve been hearing lots of positive.
Lewis is hurt they would need to figure out settlement don’t see that occurring.

Cox was a risk from the get go, his own coaching staff at LSU didn’t think he was consistent enough to start. But then he’d make a play and they had little choice but to play him.

Tolbert has only been there one season and is from a small school, those players need additional time to make the transition.

Cliff Harris can speak to the transition from a small school to the NFL plus Landry had him in the wrong position in the beginning but he grew past that into a great player.

I thought it was Charlie Waters who was miscast as a corner before moving to safety? Have I been hearing it all wrong all these years? Or were they both initially at different positions?

Bossman is behind diggs Gilmore bland lewis Israel at the very least. It might come down to Lewis or kj. Kj does offer more st.

It was reported that last year Tolbert struggled with the mental side of the offense, especially the terminology. Supposedly, the new offense is much simpler for WRs. Tolbert has the skills if he can get mental side together.

And Joseph is cheaper than Lewis.

I think bossman sticks around but won’t get a 2nd contract. Gallimore is definitely a cut candidate. I think cox makes it as well as Tolbert. I’m on the fence with Lewis because he had to have clean up surgery.

You’re right about Charlie Waters. He started his career as a corner but was toasted so many times his rookie year he was switched to safety where he became an eventual 2 time All Pro.

Out of that list I think Gallimore realistically is the only one who has a chance to get cut. Honestly Joseph should make this team over Goodwin.

Joseph definitely on the bubble. Maybe a possible trade candidate. What may save him, is that Lewis will start TC on PUP. I would not be surprised the season as well. Therefore keeping him for 4 to 8 weeks longer, as good insurance.

As for Cox. They always go into TC short on LB's. Can't figure that out. They like their draft picks. I think they give him one more season to prove himself.

Gallimore for sure. They could not trade him or Hill last season, so released one. This year could be Gallimore as the odd man out. A strong TC is the only thing that saves him as of now.

I think Tolbert is fine. As they will most likely keep 6 WR's. And Turpin really is not the 6th WR.

Other players:
Josh Ball, with a few UDFA and 2nd year Waletzgo looking good in OTA's
Dowdle vs. Davis / Jones at RB.
McKeon at TE, but they seemed to like him, but can Fant be competition there.
CJ Goodwin. I keep looking for him to be released every year. Great ST's player, offers nothing at CB. If a few players step up on ST's, and play CB this could be it for him.
Nashon Wright, which is why he needs to be better than Goodwin, since they like their draft picks. Joseph as well fits into this.

I should have put Nashon Wright on the original list. Goodwin too although he’s a better ST player than Wright. These two have to be looking over their shoulders in TC.

I think Nashon Wright goes before Joseph, since Joseph has at least stood out on special teams. Last spot at corner could come down to Joseph and Lewis. Gilmore, Diggs and Bland are locks while Scott is likely to be kept as a drafted rookie with potential and Goodwin seems to make the roster every year as a special teammer. I think if Joseph looks improved and shows he can play the slot that we'll keep him and try to trade Lewis, who is making too much to be the fourth corner.

Bohanna might be on the bubble list with Gallimore, but I can understand not including him because he'd have to step up to even be considered on the bubble. We both signed his FA replacement in Hankins and drafted his replacement in Mazi. Gallimore at least brings a little bit different skill set with more pass rush ability.

I don't really see either making the team. I think Hankins, Mazi, Odighizuwa, Golston and Fehoko will be our DTs.
