Entering 2023, there are several veteran players who need to step up their performance this summer or face the prospect of being cut. In my book these are the veterans squarely on the cut bubble:
  • Kelvin Joseph- as he enters his 3rd season, KJ has been a major disappointment. His play on STs has been very good but as a 2nd round pick he should have already been a starter. When Anthony Brown went down last year, he had his opportunities but was far less than reliable. DeRon Bland has passed him and so has versatile Israel Mukamu. And the addition of Stephon Gilmore makes even more in danger of the cut knife. The physical skills are there but the bust clock is ticking.
  • Jabril Cox- drafted in the 4th round two years ago, Cox was seen as a steal. Two seasons later, Cox has been a disappointment. His pass coverage skills were supposed to be his strength but he has not shown enough to be reliable. DeMarvion Overshown is now the young LB with more raw talent than Cox. Like Joseph, he’s on a very short leash.
  • Neville Gallimore- unlike the previous two players mentioned, Gallimore he has earned some decent playing time. Going into a contract year, he’s been ok just not good enough to warrant a second contract. The drafting of Mazi Smith underscores that.
  • Jourdan Lewis- Lewis has been a very good player for several years. His foot injury last year ended a good season early for him But he’s more expensive and the development of Israel Mukamu has made him a bubble guy in my book.
  • Jalen Tolbert- early reports from OTAs has Tolbert being greatly improved. Last year was a complete disappointment for a guy drafted in the 3rd round. He cannot afford another bad TC.
Who else? Who’s on your list of guys in danger of a visit from the Turk this year?
Rico Dowdle
Josh Ball
Nahshon Wright
Malik Davis
Quinton Bohanna
Sean McKeon

Bohanna might be on the bubble list with Gallimore, but I can understand not including him because he'd have to step up to even be considered on the bubble. We both signed his FA replacement in Hankins and drafted his replacement in Mazi. Gallimore at least brings a little bit different skill set with more pass rush ability.

I don't really see either making the team. I think Hankins, Mazi, Odighizuwa, Golston and Fehoko will be our DTs.
i can see Gallimore and Bohanna both on the practice squad once cut at summer's end.

We're not keeping two 1 techs and Bohanna has yet to distinguish himself in re season.

If they’re not good enough for the 53 man roster, IMO they won’t be on the practice squad. That’s for developing players and those two wouldn’t be seen as still developing…again, IMO.

Wait. Tolbert is a veteran? OK then

Tolbert is not going to get cut. Not as a 3rd round pick in his second year. Fehoko..probably.

I don't see Cox on the bubble. Not with the lack of LB depth

I should have listed Simi Fehoko in the OP. He has to be on watch. Btw I think the team picks up a FA LB at some point.

I mean all of them could very well be gone , not saying they're scrubs or anything but there are some stiff competition from the Newbies this year.

Kelvin for instance, he's going to have to fight for a back up spot as it is. So the bubble is being generous.

Same thing with Jabril, I mean I like the guy and think he he's got potential but doesn't Overshon do what he does ? Gallimore I expect him to be here but on the bubble yes I can see that.

Point is we have alot of New Blood to push these guys, either to play better or out the door

I'm fascinated by the love Cox gets around here. For a guy that has done pretty much nothing, he sure has a long leash with this fanbase.

Joseph isnt going anywhere IMO. He is expected to be one of our top STs guys and is quite cheap. Add in the fact that Jerry pretty much hangs onto early draft picks as long as anyone and he goes nowhere this year.

Cox is right now like our #3 LB, also plays STs and is on a cheap rookie contract. I don’t think there is much of a chance he goes either.

Tolbert I think will go down as a pick we regret but again he isn’t going anywhere year 2 IMO unless a couple other guys really step up. Counting against him is that he really isn’t a STs guy.

gallimore - agree he is on the bubble

lewis - depends on others. If we can find someone to be a #4 CB that we trust we can save his cap hit by cutting or perhaps trading him if he proves he is healthy. But right now he is #4 and no guarantee he won’t take the #3 spot back from Bland. I think the team is better with him on it if he gets healthy. He has proven to be able to play at this level at a position you need a minimum of 4 guys who can.

My additions - all of the vet DL are on the bubble. It’s a numbers game. Gallimore, Bohanna, Gholston and my surprise possibility is even Fowler could be in trouble. Fowler the one that stands out of course as a crazy choice but if Micah, Tank, Willams and Armstrong are all ahead of him at DE it only takes one young guy to step up who also plays STs or is a little cheaper. Unlike what most seem to think I think Fehoko is going to play DE and not DT on early downs. If he becomes DE #5 Fowler could be cut or traded.

same goes for all the backup OL. I think this team will have no problem churning the entire group of backups and they are all JAGs. Waletzko, Farniok, Ball and even Edoga, although to me Edoga is the only one of them that I think will hold up if he actually needs to start a few games So I hope he makes the team.

Kelvin & Jabril are still on their rookie contracts. Aren't those contracts gauranteed? I think an UDFA would have to really impress before we just eat that.
I was never a big fan of Joudan, but before his injury he was pretty good at his spot & earned his paycheck. But we have 2 guys who probably could take over for him without much drop off.
Ball & Bohanna would be my first choices, if we need the roster spot. I'd have to see if Gallimore was back from his injury before I cut him.

Takes me aback to see numerous recent draft picks referred to as "veterans", but yes, technically they are.

I see your thinking with these names. Think all could possibly be bubble guys.

will say this: You wouldn't want 6'4" Mukuamu playing against one of these jitterbug slot guys, so Lewis still has a lot of value, IMO.

Don’t think Cox or Tolbert are on the bubble.

If cut, Tolbert will one day make us regret it.

I thought it was Charlie Waters who was miscast as a corner before moving to safety? Have I been hearing it all wrong all these years? Or were they both initially at different positions?
Yeah, I remember. Charlie was a terrible CB. He got the start at CB the season after Herb Adderly retired, got burned regularly. However, to be fair, he played his first season as a starter with a pin in his shoulder. However, when he was changed to safety he and Harris became one of the best safety tandems, particularlyy against te run. Both of these guys loved to hit.

For ST only players, Joseph isn't cheap. $2mil total cost this season.

In very limited action he had one of the worst db coverage scores in the league--this after having ample time to learn his craft. I suspect 60-40 he's gone.

You’re right about Charlie Waters. He started his career as a corner but was toasted so many times his rookie year he was switched to safety where he became an eventual 2 time All Pro.
Waters was drafted in the 3rd round out of Clemson, he played safety for Clemson. Waters started his career as a free safety With Dallas. He was moved to corner when someone went down, Landry felt that he could handle it. He did handle it, but he was much better as a safety. Great player…

The Pin was in his forearm I believe, old photos you can actually see the cast or protection that he would wear to protect it.
