So is Butler a new diamond in the rough? A pass rush specialist or the benefactor of so much emphasis on blocking Ware and Ratliff?

Last night he was a pass rush specialist because of the emphasis on blocking Ware and Ratliff. Nothing wrong with that. The fact that Spencer hasn't yet pulled it off yet shows how it's no mean feat to beat one-on-one blocking in the NFL.

I have to agree with other posters though on Spencer -- he made a few nice plays last night. Overall, he was okay.

He just needs to play more. He should've played at the end of the Giants game when everyone was gassed. I think Spencer will lose some time on obvious pass rushing downs.

GREAT points: Spence was solid on 1st and 2nd down last night: VERY solid in coverage: excellent actually. I do like the suggestion of Hatch/Ware/Spence and VB on 3rd down passing situations by Jbell. Mix in Ratliff and you really have something. Yeah, I know that's 5 with only 6 in coverage: won't matter when the QB is running for his life...............

NYC is right: his quickness off the edge was really evident....people here have been talking about Johnson or Octavien providing that but.......Butler has a leg up now.........can't wait to see more.

Kick the 3-4 to the curb and move to a 4-3.

7 years and it's not working on a consistent basis.

Wade is way over rated and won't be here next year anyway.

I have been thinking that same thing for some time. Of course I am just a die hard fan but our players seem to fit a more traditional 4-3.

That was just a great move by Wade. Fresh legs over tired legs at the end of the game. That is what he did not do against the NYG and he learned from it!

Nobody had any gas left at the end of the NY game and we paid for it.

I thought Spencer played VERY well last night!

BTW: I might start a thread about this, but what is UP with Ware? IMO he's hurt: I watched him alot last night and he repeatedly tried to bull rush Gross, who is strong and big enough to withstand it. He tried no spin or outside moves and was GASSED at the end. Tells me his neck is tweaked and not 100% from week one..............

What impressed me about Butler is that after making his first sack, he just got up like he does this all the time. I love celebrations, but it was refreshing to see a rookie with the "I plan on doing this again" attitude. Then he did it again and forced the fumble.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I think after tonight, he'll see time in the nickel for sure.

He's def going to get some of Spencer's minutes.

He looked outstanding, but that was late. I would be curious to see how he does earlier against a fresher Otah.

As for Spencer, he needs to really pick it up or Butler could steal his job once he gets proficient with coverage.

Being proficient in coverage is what Spencer was against carolina, broke up a couple of pass plays and was solid against the run. Not as exciting as putting the QB on his back but no less important.

I'll have some of that Victer Butler Kool-aid too. Very impressed with his 2 sacks. What is up with Spencer? Guy is totally invisible.

Then you don't watch football.

Spence is great against the run and almost as good in coverage. Pass rushing? Not so much....he's got 2 out of 3 down pat...hopefully as Ware gets healthier and Butler emerges he can make a difference in getting the QB too....

He reminds me a bit of Suggs. Not great measurables, but just has a knack for getting to the QB.

Butler looked explosive to the outside shoulder of the OT, but I wanna see if he can counter inside now that his speed move is on tape?

Spencer played the run well & covered well, but he still didn't get to the QB, and that's what we drafted him in the FIRST rd. to do.

Come on! Spencer's legs were fresh during that first half touchdown drive by the Panthers, and he wasn't even close to the QB. Oh, I know, Otah was tired by the time Butler came into the game. Well, he looked fine to me until Butler showed up.

I don't know why so many of you are downplaying VB's play. He comes in cold off the bench & rips off two sacks, a FF, and a Cowboy's recovery. I don't care who he was up against, or what part of the game it was, a rookie DE/LB came into the game against a professional OT and went past him like he was a statue--twice.

He had 12 sacks, 21.5 TFLs & 4 FFs at Oregon St. last season alone. That's why we drafted him. Now, when he does it in the pros, it's luck?! This guy has earned himself some serious passing situation time. Who cares if he can't cover anyone? Just turn him loose on the QB, then we won't have to worry about the other end.

If Spencer doesn't pan out at OLB, I'd give him a look at ILB. He's no slouch in coverage and looks good in space. Maybe work him in on the nickel, let him rush up the middle some. It's worth a thought.

Didn't you hear? This draft was a bust. These guys are strictly special teamers.

LOL. Never did even understand why so many made that assertion.
