Video: Both retractable doors must open at the same time or...

Thats the dumbest thing I've ever heard. How hard of a wind do you think it would take to blow the roof off? Think about that for a second. If the wind was blowing that hard, noone would be able to standing around. Yeah, if only one door is open and a cat 4 or better hurricane comes out of nowhere, maybe the roof could blow off. Its probably just a precautionary measure so that wind doesn't blow the roof out of alignment. I imagine if the roof was even a fraction of an inch out of alignment, it wouldn't function properly.

I would not be surprised if this is what brought his comment about. Someone at the stadium told Lauer is if both doors aren't open and winds reach [very high wind speed] the roof could get blown off. So Lauer reports if both doors aren't open the roof will get blown off.

I hope there is a built-in mechanism that won't allow one door to open without the other door opening too.: :(

No way, any wind can not create enough pressure in the big and open of an area to cause that. And I would hope the Engineering accounted for any such reasons.

Yeah, I'm sure the finest architectual engineers in the world were completely unable to think of this before hand. I'm sure they made a stadium that could fall apart based on some wind.

Please.

It is simple physics. Have you ever walked through a street lined with skyscrapers? Even a 5 MPH wind feels a lot stronger than that because the wind is channeled between the buildings along the street. In this case, wind would be channeled through both openings, and the force would impart itself in all directions, including the roof.

It makes sense to me, but the fix would be to wire up the switches for the end zone openings such that they can't open unless the roof is already open as a condition. Hope they had a good electrician.

I don't know Matt...maybe you should consult Tom Cruise before making a statement like that.

Let me get this straight, if we open the doors, the roof may blow off, but the people in the party decks will be safe?

Makes sense to me.......

Was it built by the same people that built the practice facility?

Really not funny, but this is exactly what I thought. Then I contemplated how a structure costing over a billion dollars could have such a serious design/structural flaw.

Not really a design flaw if they know of it and prepare for it (e.g., by actually opening both doors simultaneously).

So many here know it all. So do they actually open both at the same time and why? It’s funny, many laughed when it was asked if a punt could hit the videoboard. Try to think before posting, it usually helps.

Yes. Simple physics. Simple physics which surely did not allude the engineers who do physics for a living.

If anyone thinks that is an issue with this that was not completely solved by the engineers before they even broke ground, then you are an idiot.

This is a non-issue.

It's like saying "gravity could make the scoreboard fall on the players." Duh. Pretty sure that was addressed in the planning.

Simple physics it is. Look at the simple physics that allowed the MGM building walkways to collapse. Instead of a single beam welded to the walkways to suspend them, the builders cut it in two and bolted the walkways to it. It changed the entire dynamics of the load distribution and the walkways collapsed under a load considered well below any dangerous limit. Same size beam, same attachment location, same positioning to the roof and foundation.

It stands to reason that one door fully open facing directly into a strong wind with the other door slightly open and the roof slightly open would create a massive wind tunnel effect. The wind comes over the roof and accelerates and thereby pulls additional wind over it and under it from inside the stadium. You end up with an ugly airfoil over the roof of the stadium.

What I think is being misreported is that it would "blow the roof off the stadium". What is probably being said is that in the optimal bad conditions, one of the roof panels could be lifted off of it's motorized tracks. Or, it could be said that the roof sheeting materials we say being installed could be ripped off, thereby "blowing the roof off the stadium".

Didn't particularly like physics math in college, but I loved the conceptual parts of it. The concept of the stadium doors and roof being opened at the right configuration to create a massive wind tunnel is very valid, the consequences of which are beyond my feeble math skills.

I'm pretty sure jerry said that the giant glass doors open simultaneously because if they didn't the wind would blow out the other so i think one of the glass doors would shatter before it got to the point of the roof blowing off and whatever that entails

I kinda hope you're right, but why would Matt Lauer lie about it?

Ummmmmmmm bcause he works for NBC and it's network policy?

Now that I can believe the massive amount of force it would take to lift the roof off that building would take the path of least resistance. And those curtain walls are in no way as strong or designed to carry the loads of the roof.

Maybe the membrane roof material on the movable panels could fail but the movable panels themselves are in a captive track much like looping roller coasters. And the biggest airfoil surface is the curved roof itself just like the top surface of a wing when wind moves over it rapidly it will create lift which is basicly a pressure difference between the inside of the building and the outside. Those forces would have been accounted for in its design.

I'm not worrried about the roof blowing off at all, but I am curious to see how much cross wind does blow through the stadium, as that could end up having a big impact on game play.

I wonder if they started the game with them open, but saw it was causing alot of problems in the passing and kicking games if they would then close the doors during the game.
