So many here know it all. So do they actually open both at the same time and why? It’s funny, many laughed when it was asked if a punt could hit the videoboard. Try to think before posting, it usually helps.

I don't think anybody laughed at the possibility of a punt hitting the videoboard. From day one the reports were it could certainly happen, but as McBriar stated it would be a 'bad punt.'

And in 2 pro games and 1 college game only 1 punt has hit the videoboard.

I have no idea if Lauer is right or not and it's not like expensive structures have not had major flaws to them. However, I tend to have more faith in the world-class experts in engineering that designed and built the stadium than Matt Lauer (who could be right for all I know, but when it comes to siding with people, I'm going to side with the experts). Remember, Lauer is part of the media as well and if you didn't know any better the media were the same people that kept acting like punt after punt after punt would hit the videoboard. So far, that hasn't been the case and I doubt it will be during the season.

So, it's whose word do you want to take. The engineers that build the stadium and the state, city and federal inspectors or Matt Lauer's. Because the roof blowing off would be something of an epic disaster that would see companies, the city of Arlington, the county, the state of Texas, etc be sued as well as deaths, damage, etc. But I guess we are supposed to think Matt Lauer is right before posting.

No, we don't have to think Matt Lauer is right. And I'm sure he was simply relaying information given to him by someone on the Cowboys staff. It just caught my attention when he said it so I posted it.

The irony is that on that show "Build it Bigger" or whatever it was called, one of the engineers said the new stadium roof is "tornado proof." Oh really? Hard to believe they would make a tornado proof roof yet have such a glitch/flaw in the sliding doors. It would be interesting to hear the engineers and architects address this.

Dude, you live in Corpus Christi and you don't believe that the wind blows in Texas?

When they call Chicago "the Windy City" they are talking about it's politicians.

based on the size of the stadium and its obvious weight we'd need a wind of at least 1500mph to take the roof off.
So if we ever play a game when a supernova explodes within the moons orbit then hold onto your stetsons.

Or if David Buehler sneezes....

Simple physics it is. Look at the simple physics that allowed the MGM building walkways to collapse. Instead of a single beam welded to the walkways to suspend them, the builders cut it in two and bolted the walkways to it. It changed the entire dynamics of the load distribution and the walkways collapsed under a load considered well below any dangerous limit. Same size beam, same attachment location, same positioning to the roof and foundation.

It stands to reason that one door fully open facing directly into a strong wind with the other door slightly open and the roof slightly open would create a massive wind tunnel effect. The wind comes over the roof and accelerates and thereby pulls additional wind over it and under it from inside the stadium. You end up with an ugly airfoil over the roof of the stadium.

What I think is being misreported is that it would "blow the roof off the stadium". What is probably being said is that in the optimal bad conditions, one of the roof panels could be lifted off of it's motorized tracks. Or, it could be said that the roof sheeting materials we say being installed could be ripped off, thereby "blowing the roof off the stadium".

Didn't particularly like physics math in college, but I loved the conceptual parts of it. The concept of the stadium doors and roof being opened at the right configuration to create a massive wind tunnel is very valid, the consequences of which are beyond my feeble math skills.

This much is obvious.

On NBC...they just cut to the SNF crew at the stadium. The Star still isn't on the field. None of the field between the sidelines and railings were either. If that was shot today they better get their butt in gear. But when are they planning on cutting out that star and sewing it in? Seems they're waiting to the last friggin minute.

An another note, the railings around the field are all now blue unlike during the previous game. They really need to paint the concrete around the suit walls though too. The railings just aren't big enough to add enough color.

The point being it's not that Lauer is 'lying' or 'exaggerating' (I don't think he is), but his 'source' may not have fully explained what was meant by this. So it goes to who you believe, world class engineers and government inspectors. It's probably something along the lines of they open both doors simultaneously as a precaution of the 1 in a trillion chance that if all of the factors were a certain way it could theoretically blow the roof off the stadium. *Usually*, structures of some size are built extremely carefully because you have basically a huge system of checks and balances to make sure catastrophe doesn't happen.

That's nice to know (part in bold).

There's a big party there tonight, so I guess they'll put the star in after that.

For anyone that is interested I suggest you read and comprehend Bernoulli's Principle

http://physics.suite101.com/article.cfm/bernoullis_principle_and_storms

Essentially, the Bernoulli effect contributes to the damage caused by violent storms such as hurricanes and tornadoes by reducing the pressure above a roof and lifting the roof. The atmospheric conditions would have to be perfect and a huge volume of air have to fill the stadium faster then it can dissipate it. Given the volume of the stadium there is a snowball chance in hell that this will happen, even with one door opened.
