These guys do not seem to be giving Emmitt Smith enough credit at all...

If Emmitt isn't in the top four of all time then you can take that list and throw it in the garbage.

Emmitt, Barry, Jim Brown and Walter Payton. For me you can rank these four anywhere you want as long as they remain in the top four.

Terrell Owens to the Bengals in 2010?

LT will play again, but it won't be back in SD. He's still got something left in the tank. I could see him going to a playoff contender in 2010.

Adrian Pedestrian, lol. Skip hate with the best of them.

Terrell Owens and Ochocinco in the same locker room?

Disaster.

Not a top 5 back for emmitt.

I am too young to really rank players all time.

I am 33, but I put emmitt in the top 10 players of all time, he was simply incredible.

if he played in ny or washington or philadelphia he would get more people putting him on these lists, but because that 90s cowboys team was hated by so many he gets the he is not as good as sanders crap.

Feel free to rip me. I love emmitt. He was beyond great.

I don't think there is a clear cut "all time greatest" In the RB department. There are great arguments for several of them. To not consider Emmit one of them is pretty harsh.

I personally think Emmit was the most Balanced RB ever. He could do a bit of everything, and do it well.

Ocho and TO in the same locker room? Epic win. I'd love to see it, it'll be great for the weekly NFL shows I watch during the week :)

LT isn't LT anymore. I don't think he'll ever return to his former glory. But he's still got some gas in the tank and I believe he'll start somewhere next year, though he'll share carries more than he likes.

Along with whomever made the list up.

I'll go even further: Top 3 RBs ( in no particular order ):

Walter Payton
Jim Brown
Emmitt Smith

The discussion starts AFTER those guys. No " if " or " buts " about it.

I would say Emmitt is the NFL leading rusher, none of the others are. He won the rushing title 3 times and helped get his team to the SB and win it 3 times. Emmitt was the best all around RB he did what the job entailed better than anyone running, catching and blocking he did it all. To me that is what a great back brings to the table the whole package

4 rushing titles in 5 years. Was the first RB ever to win a rushing title AND a SB. Finished with more yards, more TDs, and more titles than any other RB in the history of the league.

If that doesn't qualify him to be mentioned amongst the top 3, then nothing any other RB can do, has done, or will ever do, in the history of the league, to qualify for it either.

The stupidity of putting Emmitt anywhere outside of the top 5 running backs of alltime continues I see. I saw Jason Fatlock said the top 5 backs of the Super Bowl era were Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Earl Campbell, O.J. Simpson and Eric Dickerson. Then this nonsense with Bayless who no one respects anyway. They always talk about the offensive line making him but they both worked perfectly together and helped each other perfectly. He was durable, great vision... man I need to tell y'all this you get my point. I am just going to get so sick of people that want to discredit what this man did at the running back position.

It's very simple. If you were starting a football team, regardless of era, and you knew how their careers turned out, who would you pick to be your starting running back?

It's a no brainer.

Best running backs are
Jim Brown
Walter Payton
Gale Sayers
Barry Sanders
Tony Dorsett
Bo Jackson
Eric Dickerson
Emmitt Smith
Earl Campbell

Running backs are judged for their running skills (tackle breaking ability), and break away speed.

Emmitt is 2nd on all around backs (pass catching, blocking)
1.Jim Thorpe
2.Emmitt Smith
3.Bo Jackson

I genuinely do not understand how anyone could ever put Gale Sayers above Emmitt? Gale was incredible but his career ended before he got to display how great he may have been. He played 7 years, and had just 2 1000 yard seasons. He only played all 14 games 3 times in that 7 year span. Who knows how great he may have been if he stayed healthy, but he didnt.

Same goes for Bo Jackson. 4 seasons, 0 1000 yard rushing years. And had 4 tds as a single season high for rushing. I don't care what he did in college, he got hurt before he ever showed enough to put him up there.

And I'm convinced LT will be a Houston Texan. He played at TCU, would like to come back to Texas and we don't need him. He'd give them a boost at RB to go with Schaub and Johnson.

Simply put. Emmitt had THE BEST offensive line ever assembled to run behind.

Named the 5 starters that played together throught Emmitt's best years ( 1991-1995 )..

* warning: this is a trick question with the purpose to prove just how much of a fallacy that statement is, has been, will always be

Oh lord, here we go again about the vast overrating of our o-line in the 90's. Don't you think Emmitt had quite a bit to do with the success that our horrid o-line in 90-91 had the following years?

Also, how can you possibly use that as your argument for why you'd rank two players who's career stats COMBINED still don't even sniff Emmitt's career sum, above him?

I mean if you want to say Barry or Walter or Jim Brown. Go ahead. I won't attempt to argue with any of those. They are all great.

But Dickerson, Marshall Faulk and some of the other guys named just aren't in the same league, or if they were it was for a brief window.

If you don't use stats to decide the greatest RB of all time, then it's nothing but opinion.

so here's mine:

Emmitt Smith was always too small and too slow to be a running back, but he excelled at that very position from Pop Warner league all the way through high school, college and the NFL...where he won 3 Super Bowl Championships...topped off by the career rushing title AND will shortly be inducted into the HOF on the first ballot!

Until someone comes along with a better resume than that...HE IS THE GREATEST RB OF ALL TIME.
