Every Cowboy fan presumably loves DeCamillas. He is symbolic of the toughness and determination we want to see in all those associated with the organization.
With that said I don't know that DeCamillas is anymore qualified to be a HC than Jason Garrett. He's essentially done nothing but ST's for 15 of his 20 NFL years. His other 5 years of experience are sketchy from what I can find - meaning very little.
Does he have more collective coaching years? Yes. But he's seen nowhere near the complexity in his role that Garrett has in his 3 years as OC.
Could Joe be a successful HC? Maybe so. But he's not a more qualified candidate than Garrett on paper. Just sayin.

John Harbaugh was a longtime ST coach for the Eagles before he got the Ravens job.
Why has he seen less complexity, anyway? ST is more than just run down and hit someone.

There are two kinds of head coaches: The ones that came up as O and D coordinators, who like to put their mark on the team in that regard, and the ones that hire good coordinators and let them handle more of the offensive and defensive gameplanning.
I think Coach D would be more of the 2nd type, but from what I've seen as long as he hired good coordinators to handle those things he'd be a terrific head coach. He seems like a very motivational coach, and the players feed off him, which is a big part of being a HC.

I've posted before that I think Camillis should be a top HC candidate if anything happened to Wade. Great mentality, dedicated, players and fans love him, and he's earned consideration if its a move he wants to make.
He'd need good coordinators, but his connections through Wade and others mean he probably runs in circles where he's got a list of candidates he could work with. By all accounts, he's super-organized and there's no doubting what type of coaching he's brought to our ST unit.

Some coaches find their niches and stay in them throughout their careers. I think DeCamillis has found his and will continue to show he's one of the top special teams coaches in the league.

If a guy is 55 and still a ST coordinator, then you could probably say that he'll never get a shot, but at 44 he's still kinda in the "prime" of his coaching career.
