Coachable WR Roy Williams told CBS 11's Steve Dennis that he'd be "very surprised" if the Cowboys cut T.O. Williams also made it clear that he'd prefer for his "best friend" to be back.
But he doesn't grasp why people would push the panic button regarding the Cowboys' passing game if T.O. is gone.
"Say what now?" Williams said when asked whether he could be the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver. "What kind of question is that? I mean, yeah, I can be the No. 1 guy. I've always been the No. 1 guy. I've never been the No. 2 guy, ever in life.
"I hear people say, 'Well, you know, if he doesn't come back, where are we going to throw the ball? Roy Williams, he doesn't produce and yadda, yadda, yadda.' My thing with that is I could play ball here at Permian, I could play ball at University of Texas, I could play ball in Detroit. I came to Dallas a couple of times and put on a little show. ...
"So all of a sudden, I can't play now. To answer the critics, I just have to play ball. That's it."
Williams had only one 1,000-yard campaign in four seasons with the Lions. He caught only 19 passes in 10 games after being traded for the Cowboys.
Asking whether he can be a No. 1 receiver seems like a reasonable question.
Williams does understand that he has a lot of work to do in Dallas. The process starts with getting on the same page with offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo -- two guys Williams has publicly pointed the finger at to blame for his struggles.
"Yeah, I mean, I trust the guy," Williams said when asked about Garrett, not exactly beaming with enthusiasm. "You know, I think he's still getting used to me. That's why I'm so excited about the off-season. Just put everything behind us and show the guy what I can and can't do.
"Not much I can't do. I can catch the football. I can catch the football in traffic. He's just going to have to understand and trust that I can do that.
"But it's not really about Jason. It's about Tony having that trust in me, and me having that trust in Tony."
To answer his critics, Williams has to earn the trust of a couple guys he's criticized. Then he can just play ball.
