Views on V Butler, our 4th round pick?

We focus on Victor Butler, who is being worked out individually in the next few days by the Denver Broncos.

OSU's QB gobbling defensive end - who will likely be asked to play outside linebacker in the NFL - had lost eight pounds since the NFL Combine.

He ran a 4.58 40 at OSU, compared to 4.76 at the Combine.

His vertical jump was 32 ½ inches, compared to 33 at the Combine.

Butler's standing broad jump was 10-1 Friday, compared to 9-5 at the Combine.
=============================================

as per Arch Stanton's post . . . .

Either way, 4.58 or 4.76 is good enough as long as he has the other attributes, IMO.

A 40 time is ALWAYS irrelavent with OLB's. When was the last time a OLB had to run 40 yards to get to the QB?

The only thing that matters for an OLB is quickness, and everything I have read including his scouting report says that quickness is his strength.

Right! T-Suggs from the Ravens runs in the 4.8s and no one questions his ablility to rush the passer.

This is the player bio on Victor Butler. Can someone explain to me how he is expected to fit in here? At 248 lbs he seems too small to be a 3/4 defensive end. His 4.84 40 time seems too slow to be an OLB pass rusher.

Butler will be an OLB.

Here's Butler's Combine info, according to NFL.com --

Height = 6-2 2/8
Weight = 248
40 time = 4.84
Bench reps = 24 (some other sites say 26)
Vertical = 33
Broad jump = 9'05"
Shuttle = 4.40
Cone = 7.21

Now here's the same info for Larry English, the Chargers' pick at No. 16 overall --

Height = 6-2 1/8
Weight = 255
40 time = 4.88
Bench reps = 24
Vertical = 36
Broad jump = 8'11"
Shuttle = 4.38
Cone = 7.26

These additional combine numbers are from CBSsports.com and Scout.com --

Butler
20 yards = 2.79
10 yards = 1.62
Arm = 34 1/2
Hand = 10 1/8

English
20 yards = 2.75
10 yards = 1.61
Arm = 32 3/4
Hand = 9 5/8

These numbers obviously don't mean Butler is as good as English, but his measurables are as good or better in almost every single category.

true Adam, but NFLDS had him as a OLB, and still put a 7th round grade on him

He doesn't fit as a 4-3 OLB, which means the vast majority of the teams wouldn't take him before the seventh round -- and maybe not at all.

His 40 time seems very slow for an outside linebacker, especially for one that is supposed to be a pass rusher. Why wouldn't you want a guy that has a fast first step that runs in the 4.5 range to be an olb. 4.84 sounds almost like a lineman's 40. Is it that his first step is SO FAST that his 40 time is irrelevant?

You mean Terrel Sugg's slow 40 time?!:D I know he can play. On the other hand, Ekuban can't.

The arm length is a real good indicator of his chances rushing the passer in the nfl. Pretty long arms.

NFLDS puts 4-3 and strictly 3-4 OLBs in the same group

Great info, Adam.

That fires me up. Lots of people loved English, and physically this guy is just as good or better.

BAT,

I know this sounds crazy, but according to an article posted by Woody's Girl a day or two ago, Brandon Williams' 10-yard split was equivalent to T New's when he came out of college - I think around 1.5 area.

Also, the Cowboys' scouts having been raving about Brandon Williams' first step.

If B Williams' 10-yard split is anywhere close to 1.5ish, now we know why the Cowboys' scouts were raving.

(As a side note, Jason Williams' 10-yard split was faster than D Ware's, when D Ware came out of college.)

Yeah, that is nuts if true. But in addition to what the Cowboys have been saying about him, the video does not lie. He has a really great burst off the edge, he just needs to get bigger & meaner, especially against the run.

Does anyone know how tall he really is? I have seen 6'2 to 6'5. He looks lanky though, especially for someone who is already 250 plus. BWilliams could be the Martellus Bennett of this draft. A guy who can translate his crazy athetcism to on the field play.

I think you get an underrated ball player when a guy comes from OS. Mike Riley is a good coach and somehow coaches these kids up into Pac 10 title contenders every year. Even the worst team he had went into Death Valley and almost pulled one out.

A lot of the kids from this program seem to be overlooked coming into college. Maybe it's the same thing coming into the NFL.

One dude to look out for in that program is Quizz Rodgers. That guy detroyed USC.

You would rather have a 4.5 guy, but players big enough to play 34 OLB and still run a 4.5 are as rare as... Demarcus Ware.

Plenty of good pass rushers like Woodley, Terrell Suggs, and Shaun Phillips ran 4.8 or so. IMO sacking the QB is more about power, sensing when and how to get the tackle off balance, and a closing burst than pure speed.

You forget what Charles Haley said "the great ones have an inside move"

If he is quick, absolutely.....

I don't care if it takes him six DAYS to run the 40. ....

That is a pretty bold statement. If he was that slow don't you think he would be penalized for being offsides all the time on the next play?:D

I like this guy's chances. He is green and all but has the build and talent to make it. The video of him was promising!

So if he ran a 6.0 second 40 you would still be all about him?

Yeah, if he was able to get 22 sacks in two seasons.
