08:13 AM ET 04.19 | Just how high up are they willing to move for someone to catch the ball? NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday night on "NFL Total Access" that the Minnesota Vikings are looking to trade up in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. They have the ammunition to do so with the No. 23 and No. 25 picks. Mr. RapSheet believes the Vikings would be targeting a wide receiver, likely West Virginia's Tavon Austin or Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson. The San Diego Chargers could be a potential trade fit; they want to move down from the No. 11 slot if they can't get the tackle they want. (That could be difficult.) If the Vikings were to trade up, Rapoport believes they would attempt to do so while still likely holding on to their No. 25 overall pick.

I fully expect Patterson to be on the board when we pick.

If Cooper/Richardson are gone, I'm on the phone right away.

Vikes make a much more intriguing trade partner for me than ATL.

Pick 23 or 25 and a late 3rd or early 4th and a late 7th would add depth to our draft haul without moving down past that mid 20's range where there are some guys I like expected to fall. If we get the 3rd rounder we might need to swap picks in round 4 with them giving us their lowest selection for a move down of about 6 spots for us.

My mock in the round 4 scenario would be something like:

23:DJ Fluker OT
47:Kawann Short DT
80:DJ Swearinger S
102:Ryan Swope WR
114:Oday Aboushi OG
151:Nick Casa TE
185:Zac Stacy RB
229:Jeff Tuel QB

FWIW I did this exercise but still prefer Richardson, Warmack or Cooper at 18 to this by a long shot.

I keep hearing that the Vikes have to have a WR.
I agree. But I don't at all agree that they need one in the 1st round.
I thought signing Greg Jennings eased the pressure to do that.
This draft has a ton of decent WRs after the 1st round.

In any case, would love to see them move ahead of 18 and take one.

I agree with jt that the Vikes are the far more intriguing trade aprtner.

From a Vikes standpoint they field a stellar running game and need to give Ponder weapons to see if he is the guy. If he fails this year they gotta look QB again. So it makes sense to load him up with weapons.

Also a lot of these big-time vet signings only last 1 or 2 years. They get paid so much money that anything long-term is unrealistic.

The question is does a WR they rate so highly fall to 18. Seems 18 is a sweet spot for Patterson but who knows. WR is interesting after Austin who is obviously electric.

Unless they have their heart set on either Austin or Patterson, the Vikes should just stay put. And there's a slim chance that Patterson may still be there at 23.

There are a bunch of recievers who could help them out in the late first and rounds 2 - 3.

I love this.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if we traded down to MIN's 23rd pick, acquire an extra 3rd rounder, and selected Sylvester Williams in the 1st round.

They absolutely need a WR who can start for them. They need a guy who can stretch the field and make opposing teams keep a safety out of the box. At this point, they have nobody. The Vikings have three key needs desperately. They need LBs, they need DTs and they need WRs.

Sure, they need more WRs.
I would not call Greg Jennings "nobody" though.
More importantly, they sure don't think so.
For what they just paid he, they expect him to be a high end #1 WR.

I just heard this morning again that people want out of the first round. If our guys are gone I would think about it. If they traded with us it would be 140 points. That could equal three our four picks later in the draft.

our first 900 points
their first 760 points
pick 102 round 4 would be 92 points
pick 155 round 5 would be 29.4 points
pick 189 round 6 would be 15.8 points

I'd tell them you give me 23 & 25 for 18 and we've got a deal. I know they wouldn't take the deal but I'd at least try.

Figure out which player they want and he is makes it to #18, then tell them that you're going to draft him if they don't give up #23 and #25.

Surely you jest.

No team...ever...would give up those two picks for pick 18.
I usually say never say never, but in this case, I say ...never.

They think late first round talent isn't much better than second and third round. Kind of like Broadus saying we only have 16 or so players rated with first round talent. I read that we think that about the safety position.

Yes, it was in jest relative the the specific picks #23 and #25 for #18, but it is possible that you could tell them that the player is too good to pass up (BPA) but that you really have bigger needs at other positions and would trade down; otherwise, they might think that their targeted player has a possibility of falling to their pick at #23.

Jennings, IMO, is not that deep threat WR that he used to be or that the Vikings desperately need. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Jennings is nobody. I'm saying that they have nobody who can stretch the field and make them honor the deep threat. Nobody that will make anybody move a Safety out of the box like Harvin could.

Perhaps I stated that poorly.
