Vikings DBs switch up game plan on Mike Zimmer regarding Jordy Nelson

Mike Zimmer wanted Xavier Rhodes to shadow Packers receiver Jordy Nelson throughout Saturday’s 38-25 loss. But the defensive backs didn't do it in the first half.

Mike Zimmer wanted Xavier Rhodes to shadow Packers receiver Jordy Nelson throughout Saturday’s 38-25 loss.

Rhodes instead stayed on his side throughout the first half before Vikings coaches put their game plan back on track by halftime.

Vikings defensive backs decided during the week of practice to not have Rhodes, their top cornerback, shadow Nelson for the first time in a Vikings-Packers game under Zimmer.

“To be honest, I really don’t want to answer that,” Rhodes started, before explaining what happened.

“A matter of fact, forget it. We felt as a team, as players, we came together and we felt like we’d never done that when we played against the Packers. Us as DBs felt like we could handle him. That’s how we felt as DBs that we could stay on our side and cover him. In the beginning, we’d always played against them and played our sides, we never followed, so that’s what we felt as DBs. That’s what we went with.”

Nelson had one of the best days of his career, catching nine passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Almost all of the damage came in the first half, when Rhodes wasn’t shadowing Nelson. He caught seven passes for 145 yards and two scores for the Packers’ 28-13 lead at halftime.

Rhodes, who did surrender some of the first-half yardage, tracked Nelson in the second half and held him to two grabs for nine yards.

“That’s what he was supposed to do the whole game,” Zimmer said. “Someone decided they wouldn’t do that.”

Zimmer said he noticed the change from the sideline when cornerback Terence Newman approached him about the change.

“In the first half when Terence Newman came over and said something to me like ‘I can cover this guy, let me have him,’” Zimmer said. “I said, ‘do what you’re supposed to do.’”

Asked about the plan to cover Nelson and what changed, Newman said “nothing. I have no idea.”

I dont blame them. Mike Zimmer is an overrated defensive mind/coordinator. Ive never understood all the adoration that he receives.

Their plan failed and they got torched, for one. Two no matter what you think of a coach you can't undermind him like this. This is why the Vikings are perennial losers.
On a side note, on February 8th, will you change your screen name to Elusive7thRing?

You dont blame them for ignoring what the coach worked on all week on?
Come on man, they were bufoons to do what the did.

And what they did clearly proved to be wrong.

Nelson destroyed them today. And almost exclusively when Rhodes was not on him.

I put 100% of the blame on Zimmer. After the first snap where they didn't execute the gameplan, he should have called a timeout, ripped into them for all of America to see, sat the offending players for the next play, and told them they would sit the entire game if they didn't follow the gameplan. You can't let the players decide to do something different. Letting them get away with it for an entire half has seriously undermined his authority with the rest of the team. The ringleader has to go this week or Zimmer will have to go very soon.

I would not say 100%, but a large chunk is on him. You have to give some blame to the players for first challenging the coach's decision. However, I agree, once they went rogue, he should have lit into them and made it clear that if they go rogue again, not only will they be benched for the remainder of the game, they will be sent to the showers and not allowed to return.

I agree. My earlier comment was mostly just a reason for me to state my feelings on Zimmer. Players should never go rogue on a coach. It really just shows how inept and weak a coach Zimmer is. As soon as it happened he should have layed down the law, but instead he lets them run all over him for the whole half.

That sounds a lot harder said than done.

The Vikings were/are on the cusp of making the playoffs. You don't pull your best players because they went rogue. That puts you more at a disadvantage because you're subbing in second and third stringers. They are second and third stringers for a reason.

So, you let it be a disadvantage. The blame goes on the players for refusing to follow the game plan and for going against what was best for the team. By benching them, the rest of the team would have fallen in line. These idiots actually think they are a smarter defensive mind than Zimmer, who has led elite defenses for pretty much every stop he has been at. He has forgotten more about defensive scheme than those ignorant DBs have ever learned.

That all may very well be true. The thing is this league is ruthless and he [zimmer] may only get this chance to be a head coach. There's limited head coaching opportunities in the NFL.

You never know.

Zimmer has been coaching in the NFL since 1994 with 3 DC stops until becoming a head coach in 2014. It took 20 years for him to get that opportunity. I can understand why he let those starters continue playing.

I am not saying I agree but I'm saying it's easy for either of us to sit at our computers and talk about what he should of done. He is the one who is the Professional NFL coach and despite his players going rogue it appears he felt that those guys gave him the best chance to win despite that.
