I dont blame them. Mike Zimmer is an overrated defensive mind/coordinator. Ive never understood all the adoration that he receives.

Lol, bother to read and understand before making idiotic remarks

Zimmers plan was the correct one

I agree. My earlier comment was mostly just a reason for me to state my feelings on Zimmer. Players should never go rogue on a coach. It really just shows how inept and weak a coach Zimmer is. As soon as it happened he should have layed down the law, but instead he lets them run all over him for the whole half.

Ever heard of GROZ?

It's funny that Zimmer-hate still exists in streaks on this board.

This is a pretty damning story, though, if I'm a Viking fan. I'd be furious. I hope Zimmer doesn't give them cover on this one. They deserve to be left hanging for disrespecting the coaching staff like that in a game they really needed. Will be interesting to see how the team handles that, going forward.

I put 100% of the blame on Zimmer. After the first snap where they didn't execute the gameplan, he should have called a timeout, ripped into them for all of America to see, sat the offending players for the next play, and told them they would sit the entire game if they didn't follow the gameplan. You can't let the players decide to do something different. Letting them get away with it for an entire half has seriously undermined his authority with the rest of the team. The ringleader has to go this week or Zimmer will have to go very soon.

Agreed. How do you let that go on?

Yeah, its interesting that you point that out.

Deion was ripping the players new one last night over this.

Ironically, he said when Zim was the coach here that one game he was to tail the opponents best WR.
He said early in game, Keven Smith waived him off. The other team got a 1st down.
Zimmer called timeout and ripped into both of them big time, and it never happened again.
Deion says he shouldve never let Smith waive him off, but they both learned.
Said Zimmer was a great defensive mind.

Interesting story. I do wonder how a DB coach is allowed to call a time out.

From what I read when they went to Zimmer's plan is when they started to shut down Nelson, so I guess the players didn't know what they were talking about.

Oops facts.... Jammer don't bring those here :muttley:

Well, they're out of the playoff race now.

Every one of the starting corners should be inactive for the final game. They're still coming with the team, but they're going to sit on the sidelines .

I don't care who plays corner, but it wouldn't be them. Idiots.

If i was Zimmer I would gloss it over in the media like it was no big deal, then trade Rhodes in the offseason

Zimmer wasn't a very good D-Coordinator here. He had 1 good season (2003) and then went back to a historically awful 2004 season on defense. 2006 was the straw that broke the camel's back as we couldn't figure out how to get a linebacker to cover even a fullback coming out of the backfield. Although I blame that on making Paul Pasqualoni the ILB coach that year as he is the worst football coach I have ever seen in college or the pros who had a long track record of underperformance at whatever part of the team he coached.

Zimmer stunk in Atlanta, although that was just for 1 year and that was under Bobby Petrino.

Where Zimmer started to come alive was in Cincinnati. Although it helped to have one of the best defensive coaches in the past 20 years as the Head Coach. I do think he learned quite a bit from Lewis as his defenses in Cincy and in Minny get after the passer better and can actually blitz worth a damn which is something he struggled badly with in Dallas.

I always felt he was a good DB coach although what he's doing isn't overly complex...he's a zone coverage coach and as he once said in Hard Knocks, you can find zone corners anywhere. Still, there have been plenty of years where I wished our DB's could play zone as well as Zimmer's.

GROZ existed for good reason. He wasn't likely to get any better here and his defenses were just not very good in Dallas. He finally did improve and I know he knows how to schmooze the media and I'm sure when he criticizes the Cowboys to ESPN, they eat it up. But the fact is that the guy hasn't been a part of a team that has won 1 playoff game in the past 16 years.

The Vikings have an impressive defense, but it's filled with high draft picks and well established veterans. IIRC, Dallas went something like 8 years in a row without drafting an offensive player in the first round because Zimmer couldn't get the defense turned around.

I think Zimmer is now established as a good defensive coach, but I can't see labeling him as somebody that the Cowboys missed out on and I tend to appreciate the job that Marinelli has done with this defense because I don't think Zimmer could have pulled it off.

So it was Newman that led it.

Vindicating my stance on him all along. Bad, bad dude. Even scumbag-ish.

Rhodes held Nelson to two catches for 9 yards in the second half.

"That's what he was supposed to do the whole game," Zimmer said. "Someone decided they wouldn't do that."

Rhodes, though, said the Vikings cornerbacks had decided on a different plan during the week, opting to have Rhodes stay at right cornerback, with the veteran Newman or second-year player Trae Waynes at left cornerback.

Doesn't sound like him to do that. Especially to Zimmer. Jordy toasted him in the first half. Thought it was interesting about former player and coach.

This will get merged with a similar post in the NFL zone.

IMHO Zimmer is very much to blame here. He let it happen. He could have yanked Rhodes and Newman off the field and told them who the heck was the boss. He didn't.

Instead he aired dirty laundry to reports after the game.

Exactly right.

After one play they should have been off the field...

Apparently, this happened for one series.

And, yes, Zimmer is to blame on a number of levels. One for not setting the record straight after the game. Two, for not benching them once they defied orders. It will be interesting to see how this impacts Zimmer long term as a coach.

Newman is a selfish clown, Zimmer a good defensive coach, but not a great leader of men.
He should have sat Newman down and cut him today.
