What can we expect from this guy?

Jason Garrett said that they have really been trying to find a way to get him on the active roster and the injury to Swaim allowed that to happen.

Rumors are that he will be an H-back?

6'3 230

Here are some quotes about him.

Those practices were his only opportunities to make a splash. Mayle on all accounts delivered. “That’s one thing I got to say about him,” Butler said. “He never quit working. He felt like he should have made the active roster initially because he played well enough to. But he didn’t quit or anything. He kept working hard.”

Bryant relayed almost identical sentiments and added a prediction. “He [doesn’t] complain about anything. He just waits for the opportunity. I think it’s time. He’s about to get his opportunity and make the most of it.”

Now, Mayle says the attitude he’s carried with him at practice has been validated. “These guys, they see me practice every day and they see how hard I practice so they know I’m going to come in and continue to fight for them.”

Mayle’s stature drew a flattering comparison from Butler who has watched him perform in countless practices. “I’d consider him a bully-type player,” Butler said. “Kind of like a young Brandon Marshall, catching the ball and stiff arming dudes, making dudes miss.”

He was drafted by the Browns in the 4th round.. He was cut because evidently he had a case of the dropsies but he had a broken hand at the time.

We'll see. Interesting prospect to say the least.

He has that big body frame like Dez.

He was a guy I was excited to see before the preseason, but I don't remember much production.

I don't know if he will get many opportunities on offense. Maybe he'll get snaps on run plays like Lucky does because IIRC Mayle showed excellent effort as a run blocking in the preseason.

As a receiver, he'll likely play a Dez style where he walls-off or out muscles DBs more than beating them with speed/separation.

I'm skeptical about him getting much work as an H-back after hearing Garrett answer a question about him; however, if they line him up as a slot WR or even as a TE/H-back, defenses will likely keep a Slot CB in to cover him instead of a LB which they would use against a TE. Mayle at 6-3, 230 should be able to block a slot CB as well or better than Swaim could block a LB.

He ran a slow forty but that was all due to a slow 10-yard time. Once he is moving, his long speed is decent. He looked really good in college.

I'm still skeptical that he can replace what Swaim did at the point of attack. I'm not a big fan of these type of experiments, I'd rather go out and get a traditional blocking TE than try this out midseason. Escobar looked okay when he was in for Swaim, but I think we'll miss him. Hopefully Hanna can return and Escobar can go back to covering punts and catching the occasional TD.

Side note: Anyone else think it will be weird if they use Mayle at TE and you see a guy wearing #16 line up there? Kind of like Hester wearing #23 lined up wide or Troy Brown lining up at SCB wearing #80? The NFL is super strict about numbers, I wonder if they'll make Mayle change it.

I'm thinking he will be used in the slot on plays where there is a run/pass option and he could potentially give defenses trouble that way because he can block and he can still stretch the middle of the field.

We need big guys who can block in space because of all of these zone runs we're using. I really wanted Boldin in the offseason and maybe this guy can be a Anquan Boldin type for us.

I agree it doesn't sound like an H-back. He's a special teams guy that can be a blocking WR in a few running sets.

When they asked Garrett about Mayle playing H-back, he downplayed it. Mayle himself said he knows the positions scheme wise but he didn't sound like he expected to play H-back.

Think about some of those run plays where they use Lucky as a blocker up around the line and usually have Williams outside (Butler and Dez are not good blockers, or at least not consistently). Mayle could take some of those snaps that either Lucky or Willliams are playing in those running situations.

Yes, that is my expectation for him. He is basically replacing Rod Smith who was on the roster most of the season. Smith was a special teams only player.

I think they use the primary position of the player to determine a range of acceptable numbers.

Love him as a developmental receiving TE like Jordan Reed. As a WR I'm much less excited about his future.

He has the toughness for TE and he would be exceptionally athletic for abTE.

Back in the day I wanted Dallas to draft Shannon Sharpe and make him a TE. Maybe they'll do this now.

You beat me to it by 20 minutes... Shannon Sharpe is an interesting comp from a size/speed standpoint.

Shannon was 6'2, 228 pounds.

Now comparing a practice team player with a guy like Sharpe is almost assured to end up ridiculous but its fun to think about.

I'm going to look at how Denver used SS.

Shannon Sharpe was just a mid round pick. Sure he turned out great but he didn't have any better Pedegree then Mayle.

It would be just like the Browns to cut a player because of an injury and he winds up excelling elsewhere. Mayle was a difficult WR to cover in college because of his size, and if he can be adequate then the Cowboys got another steal.

Shannon Sharpe 7th round pick... Overlooked because of small school...Came out of Savannah State University

1990s All-Decade team. Racked up four All-Pro nods and three Super Bowl titles before calling it quits in 2004. At the time of his retirement, Sharpe was number one all-time amongst tight ends in both yards and receptions.

Brother was an elite wide receiver...Sterling Sharpe.

I can't find Shannon's speed for comparison.
