Shannon Sharpe 7th round pick... Overlooked because of small school...Came out of Savannah State University

1990s All-Decade team. Racked up four All-Pro nods and three Super Bowl titles before calling it quits in 2004. At the time of his retirement, Sharpe was number one all-time amongst tight ends in both yards and receptions.

Brother was an elite wide receiver...Sterling Sharpe.

I can't find Shannon's speed for comparison.
If I remember correctly he was like a 4.65-4.7 guy. Not fast but really fast and athletic for a TE.

IMO he would have been nothing special as a WR. As a TE he was just about uncoverable.

Love him as a developmental receiving TE like Jordan Reed. As a WR I'm much less excited about his future.

He has the toughness for TE and he would be exceptionally athletic for abTE.

Back in the day I wanted Dallas to draft Shannon Sharpe and make him a TE. Maybe they'll do this now.

Lol, you were pining away in 1990 for the Cowboys to draft Shannon Sharpe? Impressive if true.

Why is that funny?

In 2003, I wanted the Cowboys to trade down in the first and draft Jason Witten. I was very irritated when they drafted OC Al Johnson in the 2nd and bypassed Witten. I was shocked that teams were so dumb that Witten fell to the 3rd.

Actually yes... as a late round pick. Obviously I didn't know what he'd become or I would have wanted him early. But in the mid to late rounds I thought he would be a good candidate to switch to TE.

I woulda been pissed if they would have taken him early tho.

Back then I would get Joel Buchsbaum's draft preview and the write up for Sharpe was impressive for a small school guy.

So yes, I really wanted Dallas to take him... legitimately.

At least I agree with you on this. I also wanted us to draft Witt in 2nd round and was shocked and elated he was available for us in the 3rd round.

I loved Witten at Tennessee. He was unbelievable there.

He wore #1 and just looked like a giant.

The matchup problems Sharpe created were great. When you put a LBer on him trying to cover him, I remember how bad it looked for many teams, who ended up putting far slower LB'ers on him who weren't able to stay with him step for step. They just did not have the ability to handle his route running. He would stop and start, change direction with the best. Straight line speed for 40 yards doesn't really tell you all that much about cutting/route running ability.

Sometimes Sharpe would have TWO or even THREE steps on the smaller slower LBers trying to follow him. It's like Witten, though of course Witten is now far slower than Sharpe ever was. Some guys just have a knack when to cut in time with the ball being thrown. They always seem to be open, nothing the defender can really do except not blow the tackle after the catch is made.

Liked Mayle when he came out and became a pet cat when Cowboys picked him up. Vicious blocker and has some Dez like qualities in his YAC ability and the way he attacks the ball.
