Von Miller as a ILB

I think they scheme very well in general, but I also think they give Clay a bit of a free license to make his own decisions, especially in a sure passing situation.

They have those "psycho" blitz packages and guys are just lining up all over the place.

We have done no such thing in the past. We've been pretty basic.

I think in a 3-4 zone blitzing style he is a guy you can be creative with because of his ability to cover.

I'm not saying I would draft the guy but I'm just trying to figure out why a 3-4 team would want him.

Heck, Von Miller would be a faster version (if that's possible) of Clay Matthews. Rob Ryan would line him up at different spots on the defensive line on 3rd down or passing downs as Dom Capers does with Clay Matthews (although Von Miller would be our right OLB on paper).

Von Miller would also be our BEST option (on our entire roster) to cover opposing (elite) TE's on passing downs (if not sent by Ryan on a QB blitz/pass rush). With Miller's excellent flexibility (God-given ability to 'flip his hips' like an elite CB), he'd just look like a bigger version of a NFL CB but he could cover the best and fastest TE's in the league with his own elite speed.

If he (or Quinn) falls to us at Pick#9, Jerrah will pull the trigger on this guy. If not, he should slide down and draft one of the top tier OT's (Solder or Castrono or Camrini or other BPA OT) to start rebuilding our aging OL and then a top tier OG or Center (Moffitt or Watson) in the 2nd Rd.

Note: During Emmitt's years, we had the best OL in the NFL and won 3 Rings with them.

He has been all the rave at the senior bowl practices by what i have heard. He has them all drooling over his performance in practice. He was already consider a top 15 pick he may have just put himself in the top 10 with his current senior bowl

Well if you line him up as a traditional OLB in a 3-4 I would personally go right at him all day.

I think you have to be creative with this guy for him to have success in a 3-4.

He'll be fine as a rush OLB. He'll come into the league and immediately have the quickest first step of anyone not named DeMarcus Ware.

And I don't know where his reputation as a poor run supporter comes from, because it's just false. Even if you remove sacks from the equation, only one player in the entire country had more tackles for loss over the past two years than he did. The issue with playing him at ILB isnt that he lacks the ability to play the run, it's that he isnt big enough to routinely take on interior linemen and it would simply be a waste of his talents.

Von Miller and Clay Matthews are entirely different beasts. Clay was a hybrid-DE/LB at USC and played on occasion with his hand down and is a much, much, much more physical player. Von Miller has tremendous burst and athleticism, but he is not a physical player.

This is just plain conjecture. They're both listed about 6'3" 240lbs in their pre-draft measurements with Von Miller now listed at 237lbs (& 3yrs younger) and Clay Matthews now listed at 255lbs (due primarily to the Packer's off-season strength program). Von Miller's 40 yd time is faster at 4.56 vs 4.62 for Clay Matthews at pre-draft measurements. Von Miller will be physical enough to play in his first NFL year and Rob Ryan would move him around his defensive scheme to best maximize our pass rush, blitz the QB on obvious passing downs, or use him to cover opposing team's best TE in coverage (when he's our best option due to size-speed ratios).

They're similar in how they will be used, not their playing style.

Because 3-4 teams LOVE pass rushing OLBs and Miller is fiendishly good at rushing the passer.

Forget the stereotype sizes ala Parcells, pass rushers come in all shapes and sizes, ie Freeney, Dumervil, James Harrison, Clay Matthews and the player that Von Miller idolizes, Derrick Thomas.

Millers play is very reminiscent with Derrick Thomas', except he has the ability to play in space.

I don't see what the problem is, one offseason in a NFL weight room and he should be fine. He also has a few months before the NFL season to start to put on weight. Even at his current weight of 237 you still could find ways to use him (passing situations, nickle LB). for the 2012 season you'll have a dominant player.

I think a lot of people are thinking he is as big as he is going to get.

IF he could gain 8-10 lbs or so then I would be off the fringe of wondering if we should draft the guy or not.

If that's the case... pass. If he hasn't shown any improvement by the draft move along.

And see I still don't know if I could pass or not because he does 2 things Dallas needs desperately.

1 Rush the passer.

2 Cover in the middle of the field.

With Bradie, Lee, and Spencer here though we should have no problem hiding his "weakness" which is taking on blocks and stopping the run.

It seems like fans are arguing a lot about this guy but NFL teams are already sold on him.

So thats why im kinda backing off my stance of he is just going to be a more talented Victor Butler.

This fan is really tired of a 'weak' Dallas secondary being the cause of games going out of hand. In a CB/3-4 linebacker question, with variables to defining elements. Sorry, but this fan sides with the secondary issues. That stated, Jerry has confidence in the corners, and a stronger inside push will improve sack stats and turnovers as well. Just with a depleted Dallas defensive line, and under Garrett, the turnovers returned. Wonder what adding healthy starters and Rob Ryan will do as well?

As to adding Von Miller, he might be used as a 'package linebacker' to improve NFL level play and his instincts as well. He seems to be fluid enough to make a mark in a backup role and packages. Until he gets his NFL size and strengths.

I don't love Miller. However, I am of the opinion that he will be an OLB in the Pros. I don't think he translates well to ILB. Miller does it with speed and quickness. He doesn't do it by taking on blocks and shedding to get to the ball. When he gets blocked, he seems to stay that way more then stack and shed guys. He's a great athlete, no question but I don't think he's a very good tackler.

On a side note, I wonder if Spencer might be able to play inside?

I would think that memories of Carpenter and Greg Ellis would be a hindrance here...
