Take a look at phosgene. REALLY easy to make. Scary stuff. If you're at Texas State, two or three professors are using it in their personal experiment labs. Works great for catalyzing intermediate steps in a variety of reactions, and due to the nature of the stuff, it can be eliminated from the system by simple off-gassing.

When you get into more upper level stuff, you'll see more and more that benzene is denoted as "Ph" (phenol group) in a stick chain to save room in printing if there are only two constituent elements coming off of it at the 1,4 carbons.

I'm not too knowledgeable about chemistry. By the looks of that structure, I'm not even sure exactly how to read it. It doesn't look to have a normal layout like a other chemical structures.

Ah, I think sometimes that folks know what I'm talking about and don't realize that something that is incredibly obvious to me is still a mystery to others.

You're probably talking about the hexagons with the circles inside of them. That's a representation of benzene. The circle represents the hydrogens that exist in a cloud formation around the carbon hexagon. The carbons do indeed form cyclic structures like that and due to the nature of the physical bond angles, a hexagon is the most stable form. Carbon forms anything from 3 sided structures up to 11. At twelve sides, the bond angles are so obtuse that it usually works back on itself to form two hexagons again.

That's also what I meant by a Ph representing a phenol group. Benzene is also often referred to as a phenol group. By putting a Ph in the place of the Benzene hexagon, you'd be saving ink on printing or space on a website if you had a long chemical repeat unit you wanted to depict.

In most depictions, the top point of the hexagon is the 1, or first, carbon. From there, clockwise, each point is numbered through six. A 1,4 substituent group (anything stuck to those carbons other than the carbons in the cyclic structure or a hydrogen is a substituent) then sits directly across from each other.

Organic chemistry 1 classes are the introduction to carbon chemistry. Organic 2, or now more often the second half of Organic 1, is the introduction of Benzene chemistry. It's an incredibly important compound that you can't walk fifteen feet in your house without passing.

While every single picture above is linked to a single country, with the exception of Ethiopia and South Africa, "West African" and "Central African" women are lumped together as if there is no phenotype differences within those broad geographic areas. Geographic areas that are each comprised of at least a dozen of nation states with dozens of ethnic groups within their boundaries.

I understand they can't possibly represent all countries. However, they can select a picture from a single "country" from West Africa or Central Africa, rather than putting up two pictures to represent two "regions" that are very diverse.

I'm just ranting here but this has been a pet peeve of mine for a long time. I hear it all too often. I will read a news or research article and it will read something like, "...The Prime Minister also visited England, Taiwan, Brazil and Africa". Seriously....

Sort of yes. The merge the most commonly found details down into a single image. They leave some of the qualities which is why the images show what looks like double images.
