I have been thinking about how Wade Phillips' influence might alter the draft targets and draft strategy this year. The two ingredients potentially missing from this team that San Diego had are: a stud running back, and a full time hole opening fullback. I could see up moving up to get Peterson, and selecting a fullback early in this draft.

Myself I would love to have a RB the caliber of Peterson who can handle the load and gets stronger as the game goes on. I have seen this franchise with elite RB and without them if you get a chance to grab a great back you do it.

I don't think it makes sense to look at San Diego for a comparison, unless you're looking to see what type of defensive players Wade looks for.

Someone did a breakdown of all his stops, though. Dline heavy, from what I remember.

I don't want to pummel you, but this is a Jerry Jones/Jeff Ireland draft. The only input Wade will have is keeping the seat next to Jerry warm in the Draft Room. Wade will have very little say so in the draft. He has said as much with the "get me the players, and I will coach them" speach earlier in the year.

Phillips will have input as well which why he was at the combines to start with. Position coaches leading up to the draft will review players as well as Dallas puts together their draft board over the next few days. In the end Jones will pull the trigger but a lot of people will have input.

Jones has said that this is a "scout heavy" draft and that he will be leaning towards what they say rather than the coaches wants and needs. Jeff Ireland echoed the same sentiments. Wade will have some input, but he in know way will dictate anything in the draft room. He will sit there and smile along with Jerry and high five when Jerry makes the pick.

I'm not downing Wade, it is what it is. He is way more important coaching the players than picking them.

How much has Wade had in the draft?
With his experience in seeing players, and his vested interest in our future, we're really aligned here. Anytime you can call on someone that has that kind of interest. That has that kind of experience, you're going to get his input. I've outlined generally our structure, but frankly the coaches are covering as much ground as we have in the past.

Jerry also talked about position coaches looking at the players in the evaluation process. What I'm saying is there are many people involved in making draft picks. In the end Jones will be the one who pulls the trigger but he will do so based on the input and information many have gathered.

I don't know what I was thinking, suggesting that the head coach might have some input on draft day! I am sure that he will be drinking pina coladas on a beach somewhere on draft day instead! I should have known that he will have less input than Dave Campo, the man who swam with marine mammals.
