He was raised by a Bum.

The guy is running a fraud 3-4. He is a disgrace to the Parcells/Bill Bellicheck 3-4 defense. This is no Al Groh, no Nick Saban, no Tom Coughlin.

He was the luckiest ******* last year. Him and Schott have to be giggling about that record......

*81-85 he's DC saints -- snore
*86-88 Philly - puppet master - he took great talent down
*89-94 Bronco's- He took Elway down. Note they win SB's after he leaves.....
*95-00 He leaves a team in shambles (Bills) He tricks league into thinking Dat Dude is good.
*02-03 - He wrecks the Falcons D - Mora wins with same players adios Phillips
*04 - Big Lie - Dude hits lotto, easy schedule and his QB goes off and scores points propping up his pathetic 18th tranked Defense.

When you look at Phillips game day, expect a puzzled and bewildered look on his pathetic ol con man face.

He'll eventually leave the team/Defense a trainwreck and get yet another gig. Unbelievable.

You are really going off on San Diego these days.

Sure they played a cream-puff schedule but they beat the cream-puffs consistently.

They did it by not turning the ball over (Brees 7 INTs in 16 games), being strong against the run (82 yards/game) and foceing TOs (42 in 16 games). That formula is going to win games.

Are they as good as their record from last year - debateable. I would agree that they were not an elite team like the Pats/Colts/Steelers/Eagles. They were a definite notch below those guys. They were arguably as good as anyone else in the league, though.

We will have our hands full with them and will probably lose the game. Tough to beat a playoff team on the road in the season opener with an inexperienced team with a new QB, front lines that have not got a chance to build chemistry on offense and defense and a whole new defensive scheme.

Nors has gotten into the cough syrup. :p:

You are fired up today brotha!

I like your optimism... I have to agree with you I think SD is as overrated as a late 90s tech stock.

They were 10-2 over their last 12 regular games.

Their two losses:

1 point to Atlanta (runner-up in NFC) on the road
3 points to Indianapolis on the road

This team is far from a push-over and they are definitely not the AFC equivalent of the 2003 Cowboys. This was a good football team. They played well against the better teams in the league with their only loss by more than one TD early in the year against the Broncos. They outscored their opponents by more than 100 points.

Teams probably racked up some yards against them in garbage time - I wouldn't read too much into that. They are the role model of what you want our defense to be: 3-4, confusion, turnovers. Much preferable to our 2003 defense that didn't give up yards but also didn't force TOs. You can't have it both ways.

Don't ever insult the BB/BP 3-4 with this frauds version. He is getting way too much credit for an average 18th ranked defense last year. He crash and burned at every other stop in the NFL.

If This was a stock - I'd short it!

Their strength of schedule was not dramatically different from the one we played - they won 12 games, we won 6 games. They were a better team than us last year.

Are they a better team this year? I don't know - remains to be seen. I don't think it is right to be too revisionistic with history, though. They were a far cry from the fraudulent 10-6 2003 Cowboys. That was truly a bad team that got lucky. We may not win more than 10 games this year but we will be a far better team than that one was.

That is my principle objection here. Not to whether SD was elite last year - they were not. However, they also were not paper champions built over an inordinately weak schedule. They were a quality football team and we will have our hands full with them.

The only thing that gives us a fighting chance this week is Gates' absence - he would have eaten our LBs and safeties for lunch. If we can limit LT, force their WRs to beat us and not turnover the ball we've got a chance. It will be difficult, though.

Give me a break, Nors. Wade's dad was coaching the 3-4 in the NFL while Belichick was warming the bench at Wesleyan College.

Geez, now it's not enough to be a 3-4 guy... You have to be the right 3-4 guy.

If you mean our 2005 Cowboys vs. the 1997-2004 Cowboys, I would agree that we appear to be better on paper.

Other than Earl Campbell having a few career years - what did Bum's 3-4 do exactly?

This whole period from 1997-2004 has been very frustrating for us all. We have not fielded one good team during this whole stretch. We managed to sneak into the playoffs a couple of time but were never a serious threat.

And I'm sick and tired of getting whupped by the *** Eagles. We've to to put a stop to that BS. Leaves a rotten taste in my mouth.

They lost to the eventual champions (Steelers) on a bum call in the AFC championship.

Robert Brazil, Elvin Bethea, Gregg Bingham, Curley Culp, Vernon Perry, Mike Rienfeldt, all pretty good players as I recall.

While living in Texas I had the opportunity to watch the Oilers coached by Bum Phillips, even though I was an avid Cowboys' fan. Always have been and always will be. I developed a respect for Bum as an OIler coach. I have also watched a lot of Wade coached defenses over the years and have a lot of respect for him as well. I think he is a very good DC and we will find that out next Sunday.

I also have a lot of respect for Parcells' coached teams and I think the biggest problem we will have Sunday is dealing with the inexperience of our rookies and the inexperience of our vets in the 3-4. S.D. has been touted by some pronosticators as the best balanced team in the league. They have question marks like all the other teams but they are a good team and Marty is a very good coach. We will have our hands full. Hopefully at the end of the game we will have a W.
