DC nailed what? Be for real man!!! I think you're DC personal cheerleader..
nope, thats just the way i feel,
now i loved tom landry, my favorite number 1 cowboys coach of all time, but Landry was like wade to a degree,
Landry tried to treat players as professionals, but had his way of getting onto players or calling them out in practice, video room, etc...
The coaching style that I liked best, and it worked the best to me was Jimmy Johnson, he chewed on players in media, in practices, in game time, etc.. even Nate Newton said one time, in 92 when Nate made the probowl, that he was afraid that jimmy was going to cut him at anytime. I like to call it fear factor.
Why did i like jimmy johnson way better, even though i loved Landry more, with Jimmy style, jimmy won 2 superbowls and basically built the team that won in 95. I still feel to this day, if jerry jones had done like jimmy asked at end of 93 season, and kept the veterans like norton, stepnoski, j jones, gogan and others, we would have won super bowl in 94 too, along with winning the 95.
The head coach has to be boss, and to a degree, sure players can love him, but they have to fear him too. Just like when cowboys were on the plane, laughing and cutting up after a loss to the Commanders, jimmy chewed on some players and told them i hate to lose and so should you. Did the players like being chewed on, NO, but they got the point.
Coaching to a degree is like a teacher, who has to find out what buttons to push for certain players. Some players you movitate them by a good pep talk, some players like good job or give them brownie points in other words, some players you chew on them behind closed doors, but some players you have to chew on them out in public, some you motivate them by challenging them to do better or working with them on film, some players by working their rear ends off, while some players like a Michael Irvin who wanted to be the best, didnt need pushing, he worked hard all the time. Its all about what buttons to push with certain players and getting them motivated. Like Nate Newton for instance, Jimmy Johnson had to work him like a dog, and Nate even said later in his career that he finally heard what the coaches were trying to tell him, but working and studying on technique more, Nate could last in the league longer and Nate did.
Its all about how to motivate a player and get the best out of him. Like Jimmy said one time, something like this, if you let a player remain the way he is, he will remain that way,but if you see a player what he could be, and you push him to become that player and challenge him, he will become that player.
thats what i believe in.
Noll, Shula, Jimmy Johnson, Lombardi, all did this style hardnose approach with players, but like parcells sometimes it doesnt work, because your using the wrong buttons.
