His teams' offensive rankings;

1998
Passing yards - 12th
Passing YPA - 4th
Passing TDs - 7th (28 Tds)
INTs - 14
Rushing Attempts - 1st
Rushing Yards - 3rd
Rushing TDs - 11th

(Doug Flutie was the QB, Antowain Smith was the feature back, with Thurman Thomas spelling. Eric Moulds averaged 20 yards per reception. Lost to the Dolphins in the playoffs.)

1999
Passing yards - 22nd
Passing YPA - 15th
Passing TDs - 15th (21 Tds)
INTs - 11th
Rushing Attempts - 2nd
Rushing Yards - 8th
Rushing TDs - 15th

(Doug Flutie was the QB, he had a really down year. Jonathon Linton and Smith split carries. Moulds was the feature again, averaging 15 ypc. They went 11-5 and lost to the Titans in the playoffs)

2000
Passing yards - 9th
Passing YPA - 10th
Passing TDs - 16th (20 Tds)
INTs - 2nd
Rushing Attempts - 12th
Rushing Yards - 13th
Rushing TDs - 22nd

(Flutie and Rob Johnson split time. To my knowledge, this is the only time Rob Johnson has looked halfway respectable. Their rushing attack was a hodge podge - perhaps due to injury - of Shawn Bryson, Linton and Smith and Sammy Morris. Their top three receivers all averaged over 14 ypc.)

I think it's pretty clear he favors a strong running game, and a vertical passing game, similar to what San Diego runs currently. I think our depth of RB, and talent at WR and QB is far superior to Buffalo's, though I couldn't speak on their Oline.

Thanks for the research.

However I don't know if it will play into what we should or should not expect for his time here.

Seems like Garrett and Sparano will be heading up the O.

I guess you could say, and maybe this was your point, that he was not an ultra conservative guy concerning the offense as a HC.

I didn't really have a point, I just wanted to know. I knew what his defense was like there, and San Diego, just not what talent he had on offense and what he did with it. None of it blows you away, but it's solid considering the players he had.

Good post, SP...

And you have to remember those pretty good numbers came playing in maybe the worst home weather in the NFL, and with no QB to speak of.

But those numbers are better than what most people would have expected, I bet. Love those high rushing attempt numbers... That should fit in well with Parcells' ball-control philosophy. (As much as I thought Parcells wore out at the end, I do love his philosophy of running the ball and playing defense.)

I guess there's a reason that's not a full body shot.

He wanted Phillips. After the Super Bowl, and seeing the Bears' sack totals, I started to want Phillips too. Didn't think there was any way it would happen though.

In Buffalo - Wade was able to pick his own DC....that might not be the case in Dallas. Big difference.

Maybe the fourth time's a charm for Phillips, I don't know but I am very familiar with his Buffalo tenure and it was far from wine and roses.

The "Music City Miracle" game shows everything that's wrong with him. He made two of the worst decisions I've ever seen a professional coach make, first starting Rob Johnson over Doug Flutie in that game then watching Johnson take a half dozen sacks in the first half. Then secondly, and more importantly, going the ultra conservative route and opting not to take more time off the clock before Steve Christie's go ahead field goal. Good clock management and the game's over, no kickoff, no "Miracle".

There's been millions of rumors as to why Flutie was benched, almost none of them performance related, so I don't know which to believe but something doesn't pass the smell test about it.

I guess in the end I'm cautiously optimistic about him because I do view him as an improvement over Parcells but those expecting an ultra-aggressive approach on both side of the ball are in for a rude awakening.

It didn't happen at his three previous head coaching gigs so I doubt it happens in Dallas.

I don't remember the story much behind Johnson over Flutie...But I was thinking that was a TEAM thing more than a HC thing. I thought they were doing it to see what they had in Johnson and to get him ready.

If there are other rumors would you mind sharing them?

I am curious to why some feel Wade is an upgrade over Bill. Bill has three super bowl victories (Wade none) and Parcells historically was a very good 3-4 coach. The only thing that really changes here is that Bowles is DC over Zimmer. Bowles has done nothing to be impressed with.

Why is it important whether he was an upgrade or not?

It's not like we could choose - Bill or Wade. Bill's gone. We have to make the best possible decision. Wade represents that.

Ding Ding Ding.

I for one wanted Bill back one more season.

Heck the board was littered with people whining and moaning about wanting bill gone. I was not one of those.

Because I knew the candidates to replace him would be slim pickings.

However out of the group it was Wade as 1a and Rivera as 1b in my mind.

Exactly. We only had a certain pool of candidates to choose from -- some would call it a cesspool. All we could do was hire the best guy available. But it's not like we turned away Bill Belichick here.
