Wade has said several times now, even going back to minicamps, that they have some things about Romo's game that they are confident they can improve. He's mentioned specifically that it relates to his mechanics. Yesterday, some reporter asked what those were, but Wade sidestepped the question.

What do you think those improvements are? Are you surprised that a supposed defensive coach saw basically right away that Tony could improve on some things? Or that a guy can get groomed for years in practice yet still have some obvious flaws?

I guess I am. I mean, Romo was pretty darn good last year.

Any ideas?

I imagine it has to do with him dropping his shoulder and throwing side arm. The previous staff tried to fix that but it came back towards the end of the season when he was under pressure.

That and some additional hip stuff he does.

Hey CL.

I think Wade mentioned yesterday about trying to get him to drop back quicker from center after the snap. He said something like he's already very quick back from center, but they're trying to make it even faster.

I may be remembering incorrectly... but it seems like I heard that.

We don't know that Phillips noticed the mechanics. While he might have, it also possible Jason Garrett and/or Wade Wilson brought it to his attention. Romo's first coach David Lee improved some of his mechanics, then QB coach last year (Sherman?) corrected something he saw to improve Romo's accuracy and no doubt there still a few more things Romo needs be reminded of. Also he reverted to some previous bad mechanics last part of season which certainly contributed to his drop off. Who better to be aware of QBs mechanics. Don't forget both of them backups to Troy Aikman at one time & I remember many times that Aikman's mechanics were frequently cited as the best. Other QBs working to improve in whatever area they could cited studying Aikman techniques/mechanics. Remember Dilfer saying several years back that he & the coaching staff saw need to improve and suggestion was made which he followed to study Aikman cause he was absolute best in NFL.

Since they're going to a timing based offense, they're probably just getting him more precise in his drop back.

I've been saying his mechanics are terrible since last year. He throws off the wrong foot any time he leaves the pocket.

Frankly, his mechanics are not very good at all.

Very true...he needs some refining. Alot of what he does looks like something he drew up in the dirt in the huddle.

We were spoiled with Aikman...he was as mechanically sound as they come.

He has loafa-breaditis........................

That's called "improvising". QB's sometimes throw off their backfoot when there is a jailbreak in the offensive line, and they're having to run for their lives before they've even had time to get out of their drop and still have to make a play to keep a drive alive to win a ballgame.

Troy did plenty of it in the 1989-1991 seasons. Very rarely had to do any of it in the 1992-1996 seasons, and just assumed the fetal position when those circumstances arose from 1996-2000.

How would you rate Brett Favre's mechanics? They're terrible and he's done "OK". He's the closest thing I can relate Romo to.

We have a star on our hands. His desire/work ethic - unmatched. Sit back and enjoy the show for the next 8 years.

Wade is pulling a BP and trying not to drink the koolaid (in front of the national media). He probs gets in in his office and it's all he can do not to wet himself.:laugh2:

all true there, but Romo has a tendency to hold onto the ball for too long

:lmao2:

Anybody remember how high his QB rating was when he was OUTSIDE THE POCKET?

I love the "terrible mechanics" comments. lmao... Romo has some fantastic mechanics, mainly because he remains so consistent in his delivery. His hours of practice with that delivery from all manner of situations let's him keep the same basic motion from any position. He gets his shoulders around and can quickly make the transition to whip it downfield. Watch his last throw in our victory against the Giants last year for a microcosm of his superb ability.

Terrible mechanics....

All players have things to work on, though. I'm not surprised that Wade was able to see it, and I doubt that it's anything that the former coaching staff didn't identify and outline to Tony, although they may not have been able to correct it. Something causes him to sail an inordinate amount of balls, and I think that is his footwork most of the time - which it almost always comes back to for a QB. Either that or he's tipping his hand.

Let's not forget about the moving around in the pocket mechanics. Romo has had the ball physically removed because his awareness fades and he doesn't protect the ball. I do agree that while in the pocket, he's pretty damn good. "Terrible" is rather harsh in any Romo instance

You must be thinking of Drew Bledsoe.

Romo generally gets rid of the ball fast. Problem is, when he's scrambling or moving around he tends to not take care of the football.

What is exactly the problem with the sidearm throwing? I mean Kurt Warner did it, and Trent Green even does it, even when he throws deep.

Besides looking ugly as hell, what is the big deal? Maybe I am missing something.
