Having Wade Phillips come in would be very interesting when it comes to how Ware was, vs how he will be, used.

How many threads have we seen comparing Ware to Merriman, especially this past year? Well, who was Merriman's D Coordinator? How many of us (and I was one of them) were quick to point out that the two players' respective defensive schemes largely dictated their statistics?

Well we would at least get to see what Ware can do in such a scheme as that in which Merriman gets to play. To me, that would be one positive to seeing Phillips come in as HC.

Very good point.

I definitely agree.

That's the one thing I keep thinking about when I think of Phillips. Ware could find himself with 15+ sacks.

And what about Shaun Phillips? Didn't he end up with near 10?

The only thing with bringing in Wade Phillips, is that we would need a STRONG presence at OC, and that may just be Garrett.

Shaun Phillips, who was slated to back up Steve Foley, finished with 11.5 sacks in 14 games. It seems in Wade's system, you can't NOT get a ton of sacks.

Strangely their pass defense wasn't that good. I wonder if that's a result of a horrible secondary or their offense scoring a lot points and forcing other teams to pass a lot.

I'm pretty sure Florence and JAmmer and the safety of the day are terrible, but selling out to get the Qb and stop the run is high risk-reward. Their pass defense got alot better this year. Maybe as a result of getting to play those great QBs in the AFC West.

Someone posted an article about Phillips last night, and in it he said that he expected to be passed on heavily because stopping the run is the #1 priority. That and they have Quinten Jammer.

Yeah, I read that and thought it was BS. I think they just have a really bad secondary.

and dont forget Bryce Paup when he was in Buffalo...he had some huge sack totals (I think he had 17 or 18 one yr)

other than a game or two, it was pretty good this yr

Hey if he could get good ol Karl Mecklenburg to average 8 or so sacks a year in their time together here in Denver the sky would have to be the limit with Ware. ;)

As far as their pass defense they did have that one stretch where they struggled pretty bad.. not coincidentally I suppose when Merriman was sitting out. Gave up like 30, 24, 25, 41, and 27. Remember in a couple of those games Cincy, Denver, they got wayyy behind early and themselves had to score a ton of points to get back in it and win it.

Im drooling at the the thought of releasing the chains off of wares' hands and letting him run free and use him to his full potential. after all he cant get at the quarterback when hes 15 yards downfield covering a receiver....i think bringing phillips here will be a strike of lightning for this defense ....strike quick and destroy...the next couple days should be interesting

And we thought we had a lot of Ware vs. Merriman threads before.

If this hire does happen then I expect a lot more Ware or Merriman threads to start popping up.

Yeah. But then, all the Merriman-humpers will be upset because Merriman doesn't have Phillips as a coordinator, and can't take steroids anymore - so it's kind of an unfair comparison.

Did you see an additional 7-10 players from each team will be tested each week... I think thats what ESPNs bottomline said anyway.

Poor Merriman lost his juice and now maybe his coach... I feel so bad

I have thought about this too. You know he would be asked directly. I wonder how he would answer.

Phillips produced 3 double digit sackers in the last two seasons there...Foley (who had done it the yr before as well I think), Phillips and Merriman

he knows pressure defense

I had forgotten Wade was the DC for Buddy Ryan in Philly for 3 years. I saw reference to it in this blurb which was part of an interview with Wade when he first got the SD job.

On what defensive set he prefers:

“I like them both as long as you have good players. We’ve had success in both of them. At Philadelphia certainly we had a dominant defense there with Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown and those guys and had a 4-3 front. We had some great success in Denver in a 3-4. I’ve been in both. Personnel dictates what you do. There isn’t a big difference. Everybody wants to say there’s a big difference. Actually, the end man on the line of scrimmage, if he puts his hand down, it’s a 4-3 and if he doesn’t, it’s a 3-4. It’s really how you utilize your personnel, whatever front you’re playing.”

Mostly because the Chargers were usually playing with a lead.
