I had forgotten Wade was the DC for Buddy Ryan in Philly for 3 years. I saw reference to it in this blurb which was part of an interview with Wade when he first got the SD job.

On what defensive set he prefers:

“I like them both as long as you have good players. We’ve had success in both of them. At Philadelphia certainly we had a dominant defense there with Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown and those guys and had a 4-3 front. We had some great success in Denver in a 3-4. I’ve been in both. Personnel dictates what you do. There isn’t a big difference. Everybody wants to say there’s a big difference. Actually, the end man on the line of scrimmage, if he puts his hand down, it’s a 4-3 and if he doesn’t, it’s a 3-4. It’s really how you utilize your personnel, whatever front you’re playing.”

I like Wade Phillips the DC very much.

Its the HC part that worries me.

Yeah tell me about it. Not unlike most fans that live in a different NFL city than where our loyalty actually is, I watch alot of the home team too (hoping they'll lose usually) and in my case it's the Broncos and as such I watched Wade on a week to week basis for 2 years as an HC. My feelings on him in that role and all that goes with it go deeper than just looking up numbers.

I think he'd be a nice hire as a DC if he so happened to be in a situation right now where the whole staff got canned to go in a different direction and he was available that way.

But whatever.

But you have to admit, DipC, that Phillips was much better at his second job in Buffalo.

Certainly cant deny he had a better record there.

But I wasnt paying attention to that team at that time so I would really have an opinion on why that was.

Maybe he deserves a lot of credit. On the other hand in the FA age we've seen a lot of guys we'd say "no thanks" to have teams that have done fairly well for a time even if inspite of them. See some of the stiffs that have been roaming one sideline or the other in the last 8 SB's or so.

Then again I guess we could give those guys credit even then for just not screwing anything up on their way. ;)

Wade Phillips is certainly a qualified guy when it comes to defense....one word of caution when expecting huge results with Ware:

The front 3 guys in SD were all better than anyone on our DL, imho.

maybe...or maybe they perform better because of the system

isnt that hard to fathom Spears, Canty, Ferguson, Hatcher and Ratliff being better under Phillips IMO...no more read and react if he takes over
