Absolutely love Ware but if you are going to name an "All-Decade" team, shouldn't you try to find guys who have played a little more than half of a decade?

I think All-Decade teams seem to gravitate towards recency. Same with All-Time teams or whatever. People tend to forget how good players of the past are because of the larger-than-life current group.
Not really. He was great enough and better than any linebacker in his 5 years of the decade.

Ware was second among all linebackers in sacks for the decade, even though he played only five seasons. The only guy ahead of him is Joey Porter, who played all 10 seasons. Ware has averaged 12.9 sacks per season. No other linebacker even averaged 10 per season in the 2000s.

Generational player, defined.

Like I said, Terrell Owens may have attitude problems but the guy had a hall of fame career and the majority of it came from 2000-current.
As ridiculous as it is, that's why he's gonna get left off.

I have no problem with Gates over Witten. The guy is good. The main reason he gets the nod is because football is about the fantasy points and Gates provides that more than Witten. Witten is great and does more as a blocker, but Gates is no slouch. I wouldn't trade Witten for Gates, but I also would not complain if Gates had been a Cowboy.

This partial list of guys does not list what team they made. It is possible that Gates is on the second team of the all-decade team. Gonzales is not playing in this years pro-bowl, so he is not amongst the 12 players participating who made the all-decade team. It is likely that Gonzales is the first team all-decade tight end. He should be. He played the entire decade where as Gates started his career in 2003.

For the decade:

Gonzales
831 receptions
9969 yards
12.00 avg
67 TDs

Gates
479 receptions
6223 yards
13.00 avg
59 TDs

Witten
523 receptions
5965 yards
11.41 avg
27 TDs

A position should be evaluated using ALL the requirements for that position. under that criteria Witten should be the man. He is a MUCH better blocker, and he makes clutch catches. Also the intangibles which show Witten is the better player.

Josh Cribbs over Devin Hester? Cribbs might have more TDs but Hester is probably the most dangerous returner in league history.

And no Ed Reed?????

I agree with you.

I think Gates' 59 TD receptions would be considered clutch catches. It is a very close argument. Neither guy is head and shoulders above the other and both would be good on any team in the league. Both also would be behind Gonzales for the entire decade since he played 3 more seasons during the span of 2000 to 2009.

This is a pretty big deal.

Usually, anyone on any All-Decade Team has a great shot of getting into the Hall of Fame.
