Ware now Cowboys all time sack leader

I need to go ahead and start setting aside some cash to travel to Canton the year Ware is eligible.

I'll see you there. He'll be the first player going in that I watched pretty much their entire career.

Ware is amazing. I still really think he'll pass the 100 sack mark by the end of this season.
If he does, he will become the first player ever to record 20 sacks in 2 different seasons.

Which will be quite the accomplishment and couldn't have happened to a better person and player.

You are correct. According to the Cowboys, Martin holds the team record with 114, followed by Randy White at 111 and Too Tall Jones at 106.

111 sacks from the DT position...

If that number was recognized only John Randle would be credited with more from the DT position.

Congrats to Ware that's one hell of an accomplishment. When it's all said and done this guy will not only go down as one of the best if not the best defensive player in Cowboys history, but he will go down as one of the best defenders to ever step on an NFL football field.

Merriman is better.

It's also useful to realize that linemen weren't 350 lb. monsters with relative quickness as well 30 years ago.

Just as it is useful to realize that the same factors that have led to bigger and faster OL create bigger and faster OLB and DEs

Taylor also came into the league a year before sacks were an official stat.
Most accounts put him somewhere between 9 and 10 for that year. His 2nd year saw 7.5 sacks in 9 games in a strike shortened season

None of that takes away from Ware, but it is useful for context in career comparisons

How would that take away from Ware? Taylor had nine or 10 sacks as a rookie, not 16 or 17.

I hope we see another one like it someday. He is unbelievable. One of the bigger freaks of nature in all of sports.

He also was unfortunate enough to have lost 7 games to a strike in a season where he was certainly in striking range of 15 (he had 7.5 in 9 games).

he had 20 in 2008 hopefully he can get past this

Yeah. What I thought was a sure thing seems like he could miss it.

He needs to average 2 per game to break Straygaps record.

think how many sacks Ware would have if the Refs were tougher about all the times he has been tackled or head locked while rushing the passer. If those OTs were getting flagged anywhere near as often as they should be, Ware would have at least 20 more sacks; maybe more. Because then the OTs would have to try and block him honestly; and most of them would fail big time.

This is a shame. He should probably be at 17 or so and he is only at 15.

Just found this when I was looking at Strahan's stats

NFL Record 22.5 sacks in single season*
(Deacon Jones of the L.A. Rams had 26 sacks in 1967, and 24 in 1968, but a sack was not yet an official NFL stat.)

Right. If you put Taylor in today's NFL, he would almost certainly not be as successful. But if you put Ware in yesterday's NFL, he would be even more phenomenal.

That's true, however it's also true that defensive players are also bigger, stronger and faster as well.

I've heard Deacon during interviews claim he had 32 sacks one season. And he played in the era of the 14 game schedule.

That put him on pace for 13.3 sacks that season.

You can manipulate and extrapolate the numbers and make excuses for Taylor however you want, but Ware still has been more productive on a per-game basis than Taylor was (or any other linebacker, for that matter). There's no escaping that fact.

Dam... thats "beastly" lol

They should go over all the games and include these "werent records at the time"

Its nonsense. They still happened.

True but they played in era vs people of comparable size, speed and strength.

Today’s players on defense are bigger faster and stronger. So are the OL players they are going up against.

Yeah, and Albert Pujols would be even greater in 1925 and Babe Ruth would be less of a player if transported to 2011, but that's not a fair way to judge. You can't compare or judge players based on how they would fare if magically transported to a different era, you can only judge them based on what they do in their own era against the competition that exists in that era.
