Here's an amateur assessment on an NFL Draft site. Remember, we could have had both of these guys.
Merriman: I can't remember a Chargers highly touted 1st round pick exceeding all expectations to the extent he is doing. Shawne's potential is enormous. He was advertised during the draft as a problem child and ego maniac...when in reality he has been a disciplined student of the game who is getting better every week. What a great pick and surprise this guy has been. I was expecting the worst after the initial contract debacle with the Postons...and right now I feel like he has been worth the Eli Manning trade on his own. The guy is ferocious and is providing the intimidation factor that was lost with the departure of Seau and Harrison.
Castillo: Another great later first round steal IMO and further evidence that AJ Smith is one of the best talent evaluators out there. Big, quick 300lb guy with a non-stop motor who has been causing all kinds of problems up front for offensive lines. Of course it doesn't hurt that he is lined up next to Jamal Williams...but he is supplying the push into the backfield the Chargers needed while two blockers occupy Williams in the middle. Castillo and Merriman are the entire reason the Chargers defense has gone from one of the worst in the league at putting pressure on the QB to the very best. The Chargers even managed to improve on an already good run defense in the process.
