WareD 94 (defense)

honestly i don't know too many cowboy fans that were glad to let Jones go in fact i don't know any. Id love to see them. I do however know there are plenty that are ok with him signing that huge contract elsewhere because what he got in the market was not worth the ROI. Precisely because he don't get turnovers

Now I was ok with him leaving i make no bones about it. I seen him get beat enough and know he just isn't worth it although he is a good corner. I also am of the stance that they overpaid the wrong guys and i would have loved to see Jaylon or Zeke leave before him.

Oh this forum hates Byron Jones.

This forum only cares about things they can measure like interceptions. So you can be average but if you have a few interceptions, to them, you're more valuable than a guy like Byron who can shut down players like prime Michael Thomas.

I hate making a thread about this guy and his stances but those of you from the old site. (The Ranch) know who this is.
This guy for years touted defense , defense , defense. Albeit he was one of the most annoying posters to be around in his approach

he was correct though in part the cowboys have neglected or failed to address this side of the ball for years. They have tried to place cheap FA bandaids on it . They have taken flyers in the draft that either failed or the jury is still out .

the have not addressed safety at all even though I’m somewhat encouraged by Wilson. They pay folks they shouldn’t

I am hoping that this off-season will bring about a change in philosophy and we address these shortcomings

We need address at the very least this off-season
DT ( while I like Hill’s and Gallimore’s progress this has to he addressed )
CB ( I think Diggs is going to improve he needs a running mate)
LB with speed and attitude
We could probably benefit from a quality safety as well to partner with Wilson

With all that said look for Kyle Pitts at #10

this has been a crazy year and while I was excited about losing Garrett I am not impressed with McCarthy at all but I give him another year based on circumstance

Nolan not so much. Not sure if WareD94 is here under a different name but he has a point even if he was one of the most annoying posters I’ve ran across.
if we pick pitts at 10, I am going to email jerry and send him a letter and will refuse to watch cowboys in 2021.....

There is someone posting here under "Ice Star" I don't know if it is him, but WareD was "DoomsDayIceStar" before on the ranch. But this guy doesn't post anything like him.

One again, the Cowboys have not failed to address defense. They've just addressed it poorly. They've drafted more defensive players in the first 3 rounds of the draft the last 5 years than they have offensive players.

You can accuse them of a lot of things but ignoring defense is not one of them.
Don't tell me what I can and can't accuse them of

The narrative that we have not addressed this side of the ball is FALSE. We just have not gotten it right. Off the top of my head here is what we have done in the last 10 drafts. I chose to look back at the last 10 because Sean Lee is still with the team:

Used a top 4 pick and a 2nd round pick on Mo Claiborne (and I believe the 2nd round pick was a high pick as well) (CB)
Used a 1st round pick on Taco Charlton (DE)
Used a 1st round pick on LVE (LB)
Used a 1st round pick on Byron Jones (CB/S)
Used a 2nd round pick on Jaylon Smith AND extended him (LB)
Used a 2nd round pick on Trysten Hill (DT)
Used a 2nd round pick on Sean Lee (LB)
Used a 2nd round pick on Bruce Carter (LB)
Used a 2nd and 3rd round pick on Demarcus Lawrence (DE)
Used a 2nd round pick on Randy Gregory (DE)
Used a 2nd round pick on Chidobe Awuzie (CB)
Used a 2nd round pick on Trevon Diggs (CB)

So that is a LOT of draft capital. In 2019 we did not have a 1st round pick because of Cooper. And in 2012 we did not have a 2nd round pick because we used a 1st and 2nd on Mo Claiborne in 2012. So looking at that list of draft capital...how many saw a 2nd contract from Dallas? NONE of the 1st round picks have...and LVE probably won't either. That is a killer!

I won't go into free agency...but as I reflect I believe we spend more on defense in Free Agency than offense. When I think about our best offensive players...o lineman, RBs, WRs, TEs, QB....we draft those.

I have said in many threads that the BIGGEST issue with Dallas...outside of Jerry Jones...is we stayed in bed with Jason Garrett too long....which can be tied back to Rod Marinelli.....which both can be tied back to Jones. This is why we have MISSED on defense.

For further proof on my Garrett theory...go back to 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008...all first round picks were used on defense....and we got them all right except Bobby Carpenter(made up for this miss by drafting Hatcher in same draft). It was, Ware, Spencer, Spears, and Mike Jenkins.
I agree with you 100%. in fact I have been saying the exact same thing on multiple posts. our defensive drafts suck. they have sucked since 2005 with only one impact player (Lawrence) and one good player (jones). the rest have been down right awful or very average even after development....all those 2nd round picks should have been solid players....instead we gamble away the 2nd round pick as if they are nothing....

however we tend to hit on offensive players heck of a lot more than defense..... Zeke, Dak, Fredrick, Smith, Collins, Martin, Gallup, CD, Cooper (yes, trade), Pollard, Schultz, Jarwin (UDFA), Biadasz (made rookie OL team),

if we hit on defense, half as good as offense, we would not be in this pickle....

Im sorry when someone says shut down corner I think of a Deion Sanders not Byron Jones. But he's a quality corner. He's just not 16 mil quality

Can’t wait for the board to go insane when they select Pitts at #10. :lmao2:

As a matter of fact, the Cowboys have drafted 43% offense and 57% defense since 2000. Since 1992 it has been 45% offense, 55% defense. But, they have only drafted 5 DTs in the first 4 rounds since 2000, 2 of those coming the last 2 years. They have not used a 1st round pick on a DT since 1991. They have drafted 4 safeties in the top 4 rounds since 2000, 1 was Roy Williams in 2002. Another was Tony Dixon who they took in 2001. Then they picked JJ Wilcox in 2013 in he 3rd and Matt Johnson in 2014 in the 4th. Some people were high on Johnson but he could not stay healthy. Byron Jones was a CB we drafted to play safety and found out he is an all-pro CB. What a surprise. They also drafted Reggie Robinson and are trying to convert him from CB to Safety. The net is, they have not drafted a real safety in the 1st or 2nd round since 2001. It should not be a surprise that the 3rd and 4th round safeties we took were not any good, and there were only 2 of those anyway.

Since 2000, 17.4% of our first 4 round picks have been CBs, 15.1% have been LBs, 14% have been DEs. 8.1% have been WRs and 8.1% RBs, 5.8% have been DTs, the same % as TEs, OGs, OTs. 4.7% have been S, and 4.7% QBs. 3.5% have been Cs and 1.2% have been fullbacks. The fullback was Jamar Martin who they drafted in 2002.

I don't know what the right percentages are and of course opportunity plays a big role in who they pick, but it is hard to believe that there was not a single worthy DT available for them in in the first round of every draft since 1992. Deforest Buckner was on the board when the Cowboys took Zeke. I am sure there was no consideration given to taking Buckner because all eyes were on CB and RB. I think it is clear the Cowboys do not look at certain positions in the 1st round and only recently began to look at DT in the 2nd. Of course this is conjecture based on the data and only Jerry knows for sure how he feels about the guys who play these positions.

One undeniable fact. The Cowboys defense has been horrendous at the DT and S positions for a long time. It is not a new problem.

Cowboys fans..

We need defense!

Also Cowboys fans..

Glad we let Byron Jones go! Couldn't get interceptions! Durrrr

How long are you going to ride the Byron Jones Fanwagon? He is not coming back, and in spite of what you think; if he were here the defense would still stink.

Really not true. From 2016-2019 we spent a lot of draft capital on defense. And all of them stunk this year, whether for us or for other teams.

This offseason, we finally spent real resources on defensive free agents. And again, whiffed entirely. McCoy, Dix, Poe, Griffen, Worley. Also whiffed on Crawford and Lee. What's our excuse for whiffing on guys in house that badly? We spent a lot of cap on just bad players.

We *spent* resources in the draft on defense for years, and cap resources on free agents we signed, and players we kept who we could have cut.

Some of this has to go to the front office. McClay, and in particular, whoever is in charge of evaluating defensive talent.
