Variety reports that Warner Bros. has hired Will Beall (“Gangster Squad”) to pen a script for a film based on DC’s team of top heroes, the Justice League. Beall’s script has not been turned in, though, and the studio has yet to comment on the story. For now, Justice League sits alongside other DC superheroes with films currently “in development” like The Flash, Wonder Woman, and Lobo.
Before anyone calls copycat, remember that Warner Bros. has been trying to get a JL film off the ground for years with the closest attempt being “Justice League: Mortal” in late 2007/early 2008. That film was a few tax rebates and a WGA strike away from getting made with a cast that would have included a Batman and Superman in a continuity separate from their respective solo franchises. Variety also reports that the timing of the Beall hire suggests that WB was planning this latest project before, not after, the phenomenal box office success of “The Avengers.”
Regardless of where you stand on a JL film, there’s no use getting too worked up just yet. Warner Bros. has been working on several DC projects over the past decade, most of which never made it past scripting. The financial performance of “The Avengers” probably makes a JL film inevitable, but that does not necessarily make it immediate. The reception of “Man of Steel” could go a very long way in determining how quickly WB moves on this.
Unless, of course, WB still thinks it can pull off separate continuities.
