I don't have sympathy for him, I just don't agree filing bankruptcy says anything about anyone's character
I can agree with that. Those cases can go either way really. Some take advantage of filing to get out of debt who don't really need to(maybe lack of character) and some have to out of necessity(not lack of character) due to various reasons such as:
1. injury resulting in loss of work
2. Bad divorces where one party can not recover
3. Losing a nice job and having to get a minimal paying one while bills catch up
4. Tax problems arising to any of the above where late fees, not filing fees, etc keep on racking up and they never go away.
I have a friend who got behind in taxes due to a divorce where her husband refused to file or even acknowledge the IRS. She got stuck with most of it near 100k in debt. She is on a payment plan paying $700 a month and has been for two years. Know where her current balance stands? 118k because the fees keep piling up even though she/they agreed to a plan. Sometimes there is no way out unless a lottery is won and they will not take a settlement....at this time.
In Warren Sapp's case, I do think he abused the system, he has made plenty of money to avoid filing for bankruptcy if he handled his money correctly....that is irresponsible and does show some lack of character
