Was initial kickoff deliberately onside?

Did Garrett invent the 80 yard onside kickoff? I cant help but to think so since there were three kickoffs during the game that were handled the same way. Kicked to about the 10 yard line as our speedsters raced down and tried to make something happen?

It got us the ball early on the 20 and really sparked the momentum for us all the way to 21-0. Perhaps im being a little too wishful with this but I know Bailey could've kicked that out of the end zone, and I also know he can put a vicious back spin on the ball, so what say you all?

the wind blow strong on one play in that game....the kickoff you are referring to. In other words - Dallas was meant to go into playoffs this year.

I've always felt this is an underutilized play. Chip shot that sucker up there to an open spot -- even if it's a clean catch, it's likely being caught by a slower guy who isn't going to do much damage despite his better starting position anyway.

The odds of this actually working are so low, I highly doubt garrett spent anytime focusing on it as a plan.

I am quite sure Garrett drew that up in the sand just before the game and it went just the way he designed it!!:laugh:Seriously, I can't believe why anyone would think that.

Yes, but it virtually eliminates the kick return game of the opposing team too. There is more than one benefit to these types of kicks. No, I don't think it was purposeful in this instance, but I think it is a play that should be employed far more often.

On a related note, when a team gets the ball at the 50 to kickoff (because of 15-yard penalty on previous play,) it should try to kick onside.

Worst case, opposing team gets ball on their own 30-40. Where'd they probably return it anyway.

Best case; you get the ball.

How do you figure that? Kicking off from the 50 I can pretty much guarantee it will be a touch back and they get the ball at the 20, not the 30 or 40

I heard the commentator say that wind was only 3 MPH. He mentioned this because the ball fell over before it was kicked.

Im sorry I just don't see a reason the ball was only kicked to the 10 on purpose... What would be the reasoning behind doing that 3 times in one game with minimal wind?

On the radio they said that Bailey said that it was not planned.

If their kick returner was not an idiot, he would have caught it going ahead full speed and could have gotten a real nice return. Possibly.

We didn't plan to kick to that spot to gain an advantage.

I think Broaddus said something about a wind gust. I am guessing the ball started moving before Bailey kicked it so he got under it causing a pop up.

heard the same thing. Funny the ball fell off the tee before the opening kickoff and Chris said the wind was at 3 mph and maybe this was an omen. then the kick off and fumble I guess it was an omen. lol

I can't recall where I read it but I saw a report that the kick appeared that it was headed to the vicinity of the goal line but once it reached approx. the 20 yard line it seemed to get hit by a strong gust of wind and started to drop quickly. That would also account for why the Eagles returner stayed near the goal line under just before the kick landed.

Is there really such a thing as an "onside kick"? Any kickoff that goes ten yards is free game for either team, right?

If memory serves me right we had 2 kickoffs that were short like that in the game. I thought it was by design watching it live.

Onside kick is usually kicked to an overloaded side of the field, but in any instance the ball just has to go 10 yards and it's free game to anyone.
