Was Marinelli always the target?

Ive always had this thought in my head since the hiring of Kiffin. It was clear Kiffin had struggled way before he even came to Dallas. When Marinelli was hired this front office praised him more then they had even praised Kiffin. When media talked about the defense in TC it always started with Marinelli. Knowing the friendship and loyalty Marinelli had for Kiffin if this was the plan it was genius. I dont think Marinelli comes to Dallas in Kiffin wasnt already there. All this talk about Marinelli to Tampa was all media driven as we all know now. Dallas wasnt ever going to let him leave. Tampa wasnt going to offer anything for him. Kiffin seemed to just step aside this yr and accept his role as consultant with ease and like clockwork.

Just makes me wonder if they knew what they were doing all along.

I always thought this too. Once Marinelli was hired, I figured he would be the next DC. But it would be 2 years. But with all the injuries last year, and such, this was the right time to make the switch.

doubt it. Jerry really wanted Kiffin because Parcells had told him Kiffin was a great coach. I don't know that Garrett was entirely comfortable with the Felix and Oscar routine but I do think he would have kept Ryan if it weren't for Jerry's push.

Marinelli certainly came because Kiffin was here but we didn't spend a few million on Monte to get him.

And let's keep this in mind ... Marinelli is know to be an extraordinarily loyal guy. He's done most of his work with Tony Dungy, Lovie Smith, and Monte Kiffin. He's also 65. Unless he forms a great bond with Garrett I can see him retiring or joining Lovie in some capacity. Perhaps he'd even join his son in law (Joe Barry) on the Chargers' staff - Barry worked under ... Kiffin in TB and USC.

I dont think Ryan was going to survive. From everything that i heard in last season from Talkin Cowboys was that Ryan had the defensive coaches and gameplans so unorganized that they basically didnt know what they were going to do some weeks basically until they got on the field. So unorganized that Henderson wasnt even involved with the defensive meetings. It was Ryan, and Eberflus and Eberflus would email or discuss with Henderson what Ryan wanted. That was hard to believe for me but i remember they spent almost a whole show talking about the problems the team had with Ryan's ways.

I can't believe some of you think we'd actually hire Kiffin so that we could get to Marinelli. Yes, let's spend a few years with the guy we don't want, so maybe at 65 or 66 years old, Rod Marinelli will become our DC. Do any of you have any idea what Occam's Razor is?

Lacewell may have said it too. But Jerry did talk about how they were at the Senior Bowl one year and Parcells was watching Kiffin coach and told Jerry how great he thought Monte was

You ever worked somewhere and when a guy left, all of a sudden all kinds of crazy stuff ended up getting blamed on him?

It is hard to believe that an unorganized guy like Ryan could suddenly turn it all around in NO the next year.

That is very hard to believe if true.

I'v heard that they decided to fire RR well before the end of the season

Next, they decided that they wanted to implement a 4-3.

Next, they were able to verify that they could get Kiffin before the NFL season ended. They would have had to wait to see if the Chicago staff was fired and if Marinelli would stay there; therefore they decided on Kiffin.

After deciding on Kiffin, I think they planned to have him get them started on this defense and then have an assistant in place to take over. Once Marinelli became available and took the job, they probably expected him to take over.

They probably would have hired Marinelli as DC from the beginning if they knew for certain that he would be available and would take the job.
