Obviously we drafted Frederick to play center. If he supplants Costa as a starter, does that mean that we now have to keep Costa as a backup? What if Bernie turns out to be the second best center in TC do we keep Costa and Bernie due to position flex, despite the fact that neither may be adequate starters at OG?

2 year, 2.7 mill. That's a good price for a backup. It a great price for a starter. Also, he only got 450k as a bonus.

Nothing wrong with that deal

i think alot of jump to too many conclusions. Nobody in Dallas has said anything except that Frederick will boost the interior of the OL. He's not that good right off the snap, you can see that in various videos of him on youtube. so he will struggle in the NFL as a center. UNless he can work on that he wont beat Costa. IMO his best suit wuld be LG.

They need to bring as many Centers to training camp as possible. The top 3 choices were injured last year. Bernadeau was a 4th possibility but was injured and couldn't practice at the position. Centers are much more difficult to find as compared to Guards. Costa is better than Cook.

I think Costa and Frederick will fight it out for center, the other will move out to guard. I don't think Cook makes it out of camp...he was a good stop gap, but he isn't better than Frederick or Costa as a center. The only way you keep him is position flexibility, in a pinch he could play any line position and not embarrass himself.

Nope, because it was before the draft and the Cowboys had to cover their bases.

Costa probably took less than what he would have gotten if he made them give him a restricted offer. The Cowboys got a bargain contract, and the more guys they have that can play center the better. With that said, I want Cook out of here.

Costa or Frederick may end up playing a position other than center. Costa has shown promise. Frederick is a good draft pick. I like having them both on the team.

I agree. That's one of the better deals we've done IMO.

IMO yes - that back thing has me worried

you don't ever recocer from a back injury

Phil Costa was the Cowboys' starting center to begin 2012, but back problems and an ankle injury forced him to miss nine games last season.

It depends on what kind of lower back injury it is? If it's a muscle pull or strain he should be fine. But if it's a degenerative injury relating to the structure of the spine it could be big trouble for Costa

Cowboys did not say that, Jones and Garrett both has said they are unsure if it will be Center or Guard.

People assume way too much, organization has said they don't know where he will start so what is with the obviously bit? Unless you work at Valley ranch. :laugh2:

That's some bargain depth right there but Jerry said he really likes him so that must mean he's getting the axe...

We have Frederick, Costa, Bernie, Killa and Cook that can ALL play center. Personally, I think Frederick is the center barring something that requires us to move him. If he isn't a center it devalues the pick significantly.

I'm all for position flexibility. If all other things are equal it is a great trait for a player to have. But right now, I would settle for a guy who is dominant at guard over position flex, since guard is the next weakest spot in the line based on last year's line candidates.

Actually, Jerry has said he will play center. That is why they drafted him there.

I don't mind Costa as a backup; he is reasonably priced for that role.

And anyone who has watched Fredrick's game films can see that he will beat out Costa at center.

I really don't want to see Cook at center, again. I think he is a nice backup utility OL... but I do not want to see him start.

It costs Dallas virtually nothing to cut Costa if it wants to, and actually would be a cap savings because his base salary I believe is higher than his guarantee (bonus).

The move was made to pay him less than Dallas would have by tendering him as a free agent (thus saving cap space this year), but it by no means ties the Cowboys to him.

The question isn't whether TFred will be a better C than Costa.

The question is to get the best OL unit out there, are we better off with TFred at C and then put the two best OGs out there, or are we better off with TFred at OG and someone else at Center and the other OG.

My own thoughts are that this may be our best grouping:

Smith TFred Bern Costa/Leary Parnell

I think we are more likely to see (without FA):

Smith TFred Costa Livings/Bern/Leary Parnell

But I am hoping to sign Moore and do this:

Smith TFred Costa/Bern Moore Parnell
