Smith Freddie Costa someone Parnell very well could be the best 5 on the field.

Smith and Freddie on the left side could be a dominant run pair.

They need to bring as many Centers to training camp as possible. The top 3 choices were injured last year. Bernadeau was a 4th possibility but was injured and couldn't practice at the position. Centers are much more difficult to find as compared to Guards. Costa is better than Cook.
I actually disagree with this... If Frederick is slotted to be a center, then he needs as many reps as possible, and as many chances to work with Romo, as possible.

And with four centers (including Bernie and Freddie) on the roster, reps will be limited.

Nope, because it was before the draft and the Cowboys had to cover their bases.

I have to concur with that BUT Leary played LT and Lg in college so I think he will be the LG and Frederick play RG and C in school so I think that maybe it goes like this.. Smith, Leary/Livings, Costa, Frederick, Free/FA..

I think his idea is to have as many around just in case of injury again. Some at OG. I don't think anyone will be taking reps from Frederick.

I think whoever they slot to be starters, and I think TFRed plays center, they will need as many rep as possible.

I agree 100%, the starters need to build continuity.

They have four. How many more do they really need?

Can we all agree that this team was hit unusually hard at the position? Because prior to that, the team had been fairly stable at the position over long periods of time.

There are 90 spots to be taken to training camp. Does the team really need 10 centers?

I wouldn't even make it about the starters. It's about how many reps that are going to be available in any given practice. I just don't see how effective that division when you start adding more players at such a significant spot.

I don't see Frederick as a LG although he could play there. Anywhere you put him you are limited some in his ability to get into space and make plays. So that limits the playbook some. I'm not sure its a lot better with Bernie or Livings though nor Costa so....

My guess is:

LT Smith
LG Livings
C Frederick or Costa
RG Frederick or Costa/Ski/Leary/Bernie
RT Parnell
ST Free
Backups Ski, Leary, Weems, Bernie, Arkin

Tackles Smith, Parnell, Free, Weems
Guards Bernie, Livings, Arkin, Leary, Ski, Costa, Frederick
Centers Bernie, Costa, Frederick

I agree other than Costa at OG. I don't see that.

Well, it knows it has one. Other than that ...

Letting Costa, Kowalski and Cook fight it out to back up Frederick isn't a bad thing. May the "best" man win, and I use that term loosely.

Paying Costa any money is a mistake. Two years ago when playing cemter he was rated the 2nd worse center in the NFL. 31 out of 32. Cook was actually rated 17 last year. People forget how bad costa was, he is terrible and frederick will be the starter day one. Costa will be cut because he cant even play OG which Cook and Been can do.

I really hope we don't bring back Cook. His presence was enough to nearly totally shut down our running game all-year long. He is one of the worst run blockers to ever start a game at Center. He is just too tall to get any leverage against NTs and he is so slow to the second level that the LBs all get a free shot at the RB.

Not a huge fan of Costa but if u can play C u should be able to play G. Neither Costa or Frederick that mobile and able to block in space.

No, it wasn't. Very cheap backup. And for those thinking Costa will start at center... think again. One thing you read over and over again on draft day was how smart Frederick was, how many adjustments he could make, etc...

You've never heard that about Costa. Frederick will start C.

Your information is out of date. You're forgetting that Costa dramatically improved over the course of that season. In his one game last season he looked solid until he was hurt. His big question mark is is durability.

Torn between creating a dominate young left side of the line with TFred beside Tyron.........or putting TFred at center because of his supposed ability to handle alot of 3-4 nose tackles one on one......leaving the OG's to scheme with

and your information is inaccurate.

Yes Costa got better in 2011= from horrendous to just mediocre at best.

Anyone hanging their hat on that is full of it.

As regards 2012 his best game (his only complete game) game came against a D that got trucked the previous week and the next week.

The main thing is that Costa is not an NFL starter, he's an NFL backup. As long as he's paid like a backup and on the depth chart as a backup that's fine.

So in that light $1.5 million a year looks about right to me, Montre "Lumpy" Holland was making $2 million a year to sit behind Leonard Davis and Kyle Kosier. If Costa develops some positional versatility so he can come in at either center or guard in the event of an injury then it's a good contract.
