Was Wentz the most impressive Senior Bowl Prospect?

Tale of the tape -- Arm strength:

  1. Carson Wentz
  2. Paxton Lynch
  3. Jared Goff
To note, Goff is way behind here. Wentz and Lynch have very good arms, while Goff does not.
all from................http://www.phillyvoice.com/detailed-comparison-carson-wentz-jared-goff-and-paxton-lynch/

I put a stopwatch on those throws. I had 0.98 seconds for Wentz, 1.28 seconds for Goff, and 1.31 seconds for Lynch. Goff's throw traveled the shortest distance, and he had a chance to step into it. His arm strength should be a serious question mark for anyone picking in the top 15. Lynch's throw, meanwhile, traveled the longest distance, and he did not really step into it. It's mostly arm, which is a theme with him. Whatever team drafts Lynch is going to have to coach up his footwork to get the most out of his throws. He is overly reliant on his arm, and often doesn't get as much velocity on his throws as he should by using his lower body.

I don't get it...was he supposed to throw it somewhere other than where his WR was?

I don't agree with this being a valid way to judge arm strength. It appears to me...since he's a Philly writer...he knows that the Eagles are not getting Goff and they may get Lynch or Wentz. OTOH, we may end up getting Goff and in a fanboy fashion he can say 'See! Goff doesn't have that strong of an arm!'

I will say, that throw that Lynch made in the 2nd video was an incredible pass. More reason why I want to draft him.

Lynch makes some incredible deep throws downfield off balance.

I just think he has the worst short and intermediate game of the 3.

That release he has is awful as well.

wont argue.............I'd like to see some data on the quickness of release comparison. We know Marino was likely a historical high, Romo isn't that far back........where do these kids stack up. I think its easy to say Lynch will be the slowest of the 3. One would proabably guess the other 2 are ave for NFL talent. Now if its opinion Wentz has the arm and the speed of release......then add notches to his belt.

The most impressive senior bowl prospect was Braxton Miller and it's not even close. He went from a fringe third round pick to a first round prospect.

As far as this arm strength argument, I'll take the guy who can throw 55-60 yards on the money, versus the guy who may be able to throw 70 yards. Goff is widely regarded as having one of, if not the best deep balls in the country. He spends more time throwing in the short and intermediate due to the offense he's in, but he is rarely off when he does go deep.

As far as this nonsense about Goff needing a pristine pocket to make throws, that's absolute hyperbole. He has shown an acute ability to avoid pressure, get outside the pocket and make tremendous throws, in the vain of Aaron Rodger.

All this will get answered at the combine, thankfully. I expect Wentz and Lynch will have stronger arms, but I think Goff's will prove more than strong enough.

Throw in Rankins as well.....I know some guys had him up there....but I didn't see Warren Sapp ability until these practices.

He was definitely impressive. I just think what Braxton Miller showed honestly shocked some people. I think everyone expected a tremendous athlete, which he definitely is/was. However, to show some really seasoned and polished receiver ability, big soft hands and the ability pluck the ball out of the air, very good route running ability... things like that, I don't think anyone expected. I truly believe he goes in the first few picks of the second round at the latest.

Praise for Carson Wentz's performance at the Reese's Senior Bowl as a top quarterback prospect was prevalent, but it wasn't unanimous. The former North Dakota State star will still have some doubters entering the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis later this month.
  • Two of them, both NFL personnel executives, spoke to NFL Media analyst Lance Zierlein.

"One said 'Boy, that North Dakota State kid is way overrated.' And the other one texted me and said 'After watching him for a full week, there is no way I would draft Carson Wentz in the first round,'" Zierlein said on The Pick Is In podcast. "Now, by most media accounts, the draft media, Carson Wentz did just fine. A lot of people called him a winner of draft day. Depends on what you're looking for. But that's an example of how people can see these prospects very, very differently."

Wentz (6-foot-5, 233 pounds) won a pair of FCS Division I national championships at NDSU and went 20-3 as a starter. And while executives from at least two clubs don't yet see what all the excitement is about, others do. Senior Bowl director Phil Savage spoke with other club officials that see Wentz as a potential top-10 pick.

The nice thing about taking a QB this year is he will have time to develope. Sign a vet and keep the kid on the bench till he is ready. I prefer Wentz but Lynch if developed could be a good player too

As far as pure arm strength, Lynch is in a class by himself. However, he has a slow release and a long delivery that are going to need a lot of tinkering. He is actually my favorite QB as a prospect, but I wouldn't touch him @4.

Miller had a good week but a bad game. The WR class is pretty weak this year, imo.
