Washington Post: Jason Taylor Almost Had Leg Amputated If He Waited..

Freak injuries can happen to anyone at any time. The guy has played in 133 straight games and people think it was a risky trade. Pretty silly.

He'll be back and ready to go in a week or two.
It is a risky trade precisely because he has played in 133 straight games, because he's on the wrong side of 30, and because it was a trade for a player with a large salary, with all those attributes working against him, who decided that a dancing show was adequate preparation for the rigors of an NFL season.

There are any number of reasons why it was a stupid, risky trade based on the desperate reaction of a franchise that couldn't handle an injury to the magnificent Phillip Daniels. That's been borne out thus far.

It was a freak accident.

As much as we dislike Snyder (and the 'Skins), it was a very good trade, at the time.

Same thing happened to former Dallas Star Bill Guerin several years ago..Except I think it was his thigh..he ended up playing again at a high level..but was younger at the time.

holy crap!! im making the call now.. Taylor is done!!

The Commanders seriously need to stop trading for players. It never works out.

This is a horrible outcome to a freak incident, but still. If you're a successful vet and you get traded to the Commanders, game over.

Interesting avatar. You from the Hawkeye state?

and it took him months to get back to just play. he didnt get back to full strength until the next season.

My best guess is he developed severe swelling from the initial injury that raised the tissue pressure so high that blood flow into the leg was prevented. It is called a compartment syndrome and is not uncommon in the calf and the forearm due to the abundant connective tissue in these areas of the body.

The treatment is basically to put an incision in the skin and connective tissue to allow circulation to resume.

If any tissue has died, you remove that at the time of the surgery.

Once swelling has died down, you close everything back up.

My guess is he'll be out of action for a very long time to allow the healing to occur.

One thing about this condition is it is extraordinarily painful - way worse than a broken bone or dislocated joint.

It has been alluded to, but I don't think this injury has anything to do with lack of preparation for the football season. It is just very bad luck to get that type of swelling after a soft issue injury. I have seen this before but usually in association with fractures in the forearm or calf.

This happened to a buddy of mine who played semipro football during the summer of 2007, except it was in his thigh

Doctors told him the same thing, you wait your leg MAY be amputated. So lets get this show on the road

It took him about 6 weeks to get back to full strength.

We'll see how Taylor's body responds. As he said, it could be a week, or could be months

Wow. Some idiot on the board the other called him out for missing the game.

I hate the Skins but Taylor is a great player and a good person. Horrible outcome.

I don't wish injury on anyone however didn't Taylor rip up a sign that a cowboy fan was holding......

With their 3 2nd round picks bunched up together, they had a stud pass rusher, Calais Campbell, in their laps. But instead, they chose 2 WRs and a TE, when they already have Moss, ARE, Cooley, and Yoder.

Not to mention those three 2nd round picks have been total BUSTS so far. While we're getting true star power from Felix Jones, i think their top three picks have a total of one catch for like 5 yards so far. :lmao:

Oh, and a one legged Taylor is still better than any other pass rusher the skynryds got, so i'd expect him back before too long.

The Skins have no luck with players whose last name is Taylor, do they?

Did you really mean that as callous as it sounds?

Too bad for Taylor. I hope he will be all right. Hate to see a kid in jeopardy of losing his life or even his leg.

I've seen this before. It is a nasty open wound until they close everything back up.

I wish him the best.

So, he's supposed to play the season on one good leg?

Commander fans are getting very desperate if they're sinking that low.

This sounds more like sensationalistic crap from the doctor or Taylor himself.

Give me a break. For instance, if any part of your body becomes infected, you are at risk of losing the limb or even dying. But we have these things called antibiotics to prevent that from happening. And it's such a simple fix, that you don't hear many saying, "Man, if he had let that go longer, he was in danger of going into septic shock and dying."

Fine, he had blood pooling in his leg. So what? Simple procedure and I can almost guarantee he'll be back in 2-3 weeks.

The thread title is a tad misleading.

Did he almost have it amputated or would it have been amputated if he waited.

Holy sheeet. That sucks. Hopefully he can come back this year: but I'd say it's a long shot. 8-12 week deal will they then put him on IR? Gonna need that roster spot.....

I do think Taylor is a good player and pass rusher. I Just didn't think it was a good trade for two reasons.

First the Skins weren't one player away from being a contender. They still have a few holes that they have to fill. Taylor's presence does not erase those holes or overcome them.

Second they likely won't have his services for more than two years. He may even be gone after one season. By then the Skins may have filled the other holes on their team, but they will then be without their pass rusher.

It can easily be compared to the trade that Dallas used to acquire Charles Haley. Haley became the final component for a team that was on the verge of playing for a championship. He also played in Dallas for 5 years.

Somewhere Parcells is saying - it's because you spent all that time on your tipee toes dancing in the offseason.

Haley was 28/29 when we picked him up
