Mods, please delte if it's a repost........

WASHINGTON (AP) -- It's time to move Steve Mariucci from "maybe" to "definite" on the list of Washington Commanders coaching candidates.

The former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions coach will interview with owner Dan Snyder about the Commanders vacancy, a person familiar with the selection process told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The interview will take place in Arizona before the Super Bowl on Sunday, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Commanders have not publicly released the names of any candidates.

Mariucci has been cagey about his interest in the Commanders all week, regularly issuing non-denials when the subject was raised by colleagues on the air during his current job as an analyst for the NFL Network.

Mariucci's contract with the network expires after the Super Bowl.

Mariucci was 75-71, including 3-4 in the playoffs, over nine seasons in San Francisco and Detroit. He won two division titles with the 49ers and took them to the postseason four times in six years. He was far less successful with the Lions, going 15-28 before he was fired late in the 2005 season.

Mariucci joins former New York Giants coach Jim Fassel and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks as leading contenders to succeed Joe Gibbs, who resigned Jan. 8. Snyder is also interested in interviewing Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels after the Super Bowl.

McDaniels too, I heard earlier this week that even though he had previously told all teams he was uninterested in entertaining offers as head coach, that he had renegged and said he would listen to Washington.

Who knows how many people Snyder is interviewing? It seems like anyone whos anyone in football is down there, so...

I for one like Mariucci, and I would really like him to just stay at NFLN so I can watch mooch rich and deion.

I like the way Brett phrased it on NFLN, "moving on to, not what I consider bigger or better things"

You guys feel about Spags the same way we do about Garrett.

Mooch + Zorn = West Coast Offense.

They don't have the QB, RB or WRs to run that. Cooley's about the only decent fit.

That could set them back at least a couple of years, if not more considering the old offensive line that needs to be revamped too.

WTH are they thinking?

Snyders interest in Spags will depend a lot on how the Giants Defense fares this Sunday. At least thats what I think. I wouldnt mind him.

What happens to the Raiders when Al kicks it? Does he have a son or something?

Good Question, I never pay attention to the details in oakland so I am not sure what the structure is there.

Actually, their WR corps is well-suited to a West Coast offense... they're smaller but quicker WRs for the most part...

But it would be a killer for them to have to implement a new, completely different system... especially for Jason Campbell, who reportedly needed 3 months to get through "Fun With Dick & Jane"...

And that was when he was a sophomore in college... :D

Based on what I have seen/read, I am starting to warm up to Mooch. He did have 2 down years in San Fran, however he pulled them out of it winning 22 games over next 2 years -- before being fired in an apparent power move by Tom Donahue, the GM at the time...who subsequently hired Dennis Erickson.

His Detroit record is abysmal at best, but really, if you look at the teams he had, do you see ANY coach winning 15 games in that span?

He did coax a decent season out of Harrington in his 2nd year, well, decent for Harrington anyway.

I think it would be an interesting hire, all the coaching staff elements are there, and I believe Cambell ran a similar offense at Auburn and did well with it.

If they go with Fassel -- we deserve every bit of criticism we as Skins fans will get!

Sort of. It was a modified version designed to get the ball into the hands of Cadillac and Brown in any way possible.

Campell only attempted 270 passes that season versus 392 rushing attempt between the two backs. Not exactly your traditional WCO scheme.

Plus you can get away with a slower release and marginal short- intermediate accuracy in college. Nothing beats getting the ball out quickly and accurately in an NFL WCO.

I really think it is a mismatch for him. Heck I think Romo is actually better suited for it.
