Free was having a great year (well start to the year) long before Waters took a snap in a meaningful game.

maybe, but he's going to have to give a lot of help now on Berny's man because the guy flat out has no strength at all. which will lead to DEs keying off on taking better angles and blowing right by Free

Agreed.

At this stage Free has done enough to make me believe Free's turnaround has nothing to do with who is playing next to him -- it's that Free finally turned his career around through hard work, attention to detail (ie technique) and confidence.

How was this any different than the first few games when Waters was rounding into shape?

I just hope that Bern learned something from Waiters.

Was hard to say against Detroit since their front 7 is massively good and was giving everyone problems.

Hell Waters hurt himself in the first half fighting desperately not to get trucked by Fairley.

We need two new guards not one . And wait theeeeereees more , breaking news : this team sucks at drafting guards .

Given the needs on the defensive line I doubt that two new guards will be drafted. Free's contract expires at the end of the '14 season, so I wouldn't be surprised to see a guard and tackle drafted in May.

That being said, from my understanding Leary's knee that was sore/scoped was not the knee with the previous problem. Bottom line is that I'm not worrying about replacing Leary as of the moment.

Before our season starts next year we need 4 interior lineman. 2 guards and 2 DT's. I like Leary, but with his knee issue, we need an insurance policy.

Waters was playing at a high level. It was nice to have some stability/consistency there unlike guys like Bernadeau.

I think our standards are low due to erratic guard play the last couple of years.

Waters was good... Not great... Not top-10... But good.

But it's time to move on.

I don't see that happening... at least not through the draft.

one guard. one DT. one DE. one tackle.

That I could see.

It's not a stupid move when he can't get a Dr to clear him. The tear is right near the elbow.

Hate to lose Waters - :( - hope he comes back next year, as a player, player-coach, or coach. He's definitely an RKG.

i hate that waters is gone......our OL will struggle now. Will Tony make it out of the season alive, much less able to function in a normal capacity?

I bashed the guy quite a bit the first two preseason games.....however, in the last 3 he showed me something. I am glad we called up Pellerin from the practice squad.

Damn. It seemed like he tried to fight to stay on the roster, even though he was hobbled, which is kind of refreshing. I wouldn't mind having him back next year if he makes a full recovery and gets into football shape before the season begins.

i think he was trying to play b/c he knows that this is his last season. i'd be surprised if he returned.

The Cowboys have altered their OL scheme to help Free this season.

They have the RG keep a closer than normal spacing with Free. This minimizes the outside rushers ability to beat Free to the inside and allows Free to over-set to the outside. They compensate by having the Center help to the right much much more than to the left. This causes Leary and Smith to be isolated and makes their jobs more difficult. They also call/design running plays to work around the problems that Free had last year. They have also played games with the way they use TEs to help Free.

The garbage ratings by PFF don't account for the fact that Smith has a much higher degree of difficultly than Free due to the scheme.

lol we were saying this same exact thing last year. cowboys will find a way to fit a receiver/tight end/qb/cornerback in there.

That's good information and a valid point.

I think both tackles have done a good job this year. So has the center.
