Watkins working with No. 1 defense in nickel package

I really don't think Watkins will technically be starting early in the season. It looks like Bill wants to go with Davis for running downs and Watkins for passing downs, which really isn't a bad idea. KD may blow coverage, but he is still one of the better tackling safeties in the league.

Don't forget about Willie Pile.. He was taking some time away from Davis as the season came to a close...

Willlllllllllllllllllllllie Piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile. Willie Pile, has 22 carries for 162 yards. Who's Willie Pile?! He is!

Oh wait, that was Willie Parker.

On a serious note - I do like Pile though, hope he turns it up a notch this year.

For some more information on the beloved "Killer," this is from Scientific Footbal 2006:

Out of 36 "Coverage Safeties" KD ranked 24th in Success Percentage, ranked 36th in Yard Per Attempt, and ranked 36th in SYPA(the overall metric).

You can't teach height.

And you were one of the ones that mocked me because I said that Watkins wasn't selected earlier in the draft because many of the personnel from around the league were "prejudiced" against him because of his size.

And now Parcells says the same thing.

I'll be expecting your apology. :)

he was essentially a rookie last year, oh guess what? Watkins is a rookie this year! I know Watkins has the advantage over Killer last year in the fact that he has great recovery speed, but Killer isn't a rookie anymore, so Parcells is going to be more apt to feel comfortable in him, rather than Watkins, evidenced by Davis having the inside track for starting wk 1

read between the lines all you want, but BIll said if the situation warrants it, he'll start a rookie at FS, but he'll be plenty nervous game-by-game

Our wishes have been granted. The cover safety we've always coveted to play alongside Roy "linebacker" Williams.

I can honestly say I have not read or heard or seen a single thing from him this training camp. I read that, I had completely forgot about him.

Well, if Keith Davis was essentially a rookie last season, then BP should have NO PROBLEM starting Watkins this season.

no, because Killer has 16 games under his belt, while Watkins has none

btw, I'm sure Watkins will take over the FS job at some point, but it won't be the 1st half of the season IMO

Right. It's just a guessing game as to when, but a certainty as to whether he will take over the job. I rest firmly in the "Watkins camp" so my guess is obviously going to be sooner than later.

If he is "superb" at special teams as Coach Parcells says and supplants Davis as a starter, I will be pleased as I am positive he can do more in coverage and if he makes mistakes, he can cover the ground to compensate.

I would be very happy as well. I hope he does take over for Davis. But what i am saying is that talking prowbowl when we haven't even seen him in a real game is a bit premature.

I remember right after our draft how several of the raters/evaluators of the draft didn't even mention that we had drafted Watkins. In fact a few of them said we hadn't even addressed our FS problem. One of them (can't recall who) was angry with our selection of Watkins in the 5th round (thought we should have drafted another FS on the first day). Anyway, he went on to isay that Watkins wouldn't even make our team. Only 1 or 2 writers gave us credit for drafting Watkins. So, I really want this kid to make it REALLY BIG beginning with Monday nite's game & even bigger in 2nd game of the season on nationally televised MNF against the Skins. I want Watkins to make a statement in that game so that even Theisman (moaning in pain at what we doing to the Skins) acknowledges how good our defense (and Watkins) are. It's payback time -- big time. BTW: I know Watkins will make some rookie mistakes during the season, but on that Monday nite game, I want him to be (along with rest of our defense & offense) to be outstanding.

I'm just glad we didn't sign that head-case Dwight Smith

We had a whole flock of people on this board who lost all perspective when it came to Dwight Smith. You would have thought we passed on Darren Woodson in his prime for God sakes.

Yeeaahh FireFox!!

Oh and a little more on topic...

I dont think Watkins will start vs. Jax, but I think he will slowly take more and more playing time from Davis as the season goes on untill he takes over the starting job.

Did I mock you for that? I don't think I mocked anyone for anything. I just knew what I wanted, and I wanted to feel more comfortable. Good training camp reports are going a long way towards alleviating that, but it's not regular season yet.

No, you really wouldn't have. You might have thought we had Woody in his prime already on the team, but people weren't making a huge deal out of Dwight Smith, in a vacuum. Just in relation to what we had on the team.

I saw "terrible mistake" uttered a few times, and some were acting like BP had no business running an NFL team, and hell, some used not going after Dwight as indicative of all BP's personnel moves in Dallas

OK, drama-mama. I don't think it went down like that. It still may turn out to be a big mistake, we don't know yet. There's no use crying over it now, from either side.
