Getting something for our players we were getting rid of anyway, and cutting players who are not producing or are underproducing.

Ward trade. Look, Switzer was not making this team. Period. We traded a player who was not making our team for a player who was not making their team. Will he work out? Don't know of course, but great move bringing him in to see. Nothing lost.

Tavon trade: We had a ton of draft picks. They simply were mostly not going to make the team. Why not dump a 6th for a guy who has major speed? Can his issues be resolved? Who knows, but we only spent a late draft pick on him. Great trade.

Dez: He wasn't producing, for whatever reason, and didn't fit. Doesn't matter why any more, it was time to dump the salary and move on. This beats the hades out of paying him for subpar production, which we've been guilty of several times in the past. Good move.

Tough moves have to be made for any NFL franchise, and it appears we may be on the way to making them.

while i agree, i wish we could have gotten something for Dez but guessing that other teams didn't see his contract as viable either which is why we didn't...so that makes sense.

We are also reaching the point where we finally are done with bad contracts and just about out of dead money hell (next year)...so now we need to shift the approach from getting rid of older underperforming vets to getting value out of younger guys that havent earned their 2nd contract...

Watch out Ksk, it almost sounds like you're being positive!

Is this a similar strategy the New England Patsies have employed for the last 15 or so years?

I'm being a bit rhetorical of course. Is the FO trying to have a similar strategy to NE? I say yes. The chink in the armor though is coaching and specifically head coaching (although I'm not enamored with the OC and DC either).

ksk, couldn't agree more but I do disagree with those that think this is all Son and McClay and Booger is fading. I believe he's every bit as much in charge as he's ever been but he's been listening to different voices.

He made the tough call on Dez because he liked him. We all thought this was about cap space and the money and according to McClay, it wasn't about that at all. Odds are, he sat Booger down and had him look at the same film he'd been looking at. The same film other team's DC's and DB's had been looking at. Gone, one star. And parting with stars is tough on him but he did it anyway.

The real sign that this had truly changed for the better was the draft. If there ever was a time for Booger to make a splash, this was the one. Make some crazy bigtime trade and get the fans all chanting "Booger! Booger!! Booger!!!" but he stayed put and made the picks that made the most sense and as far as value in a draft, they did very well. I'll give them an A- for position selection and value. He even resisted picking a WR with that 1st pick and we know he loves him some WR. Instead they looked beyond that first day for value.

The actual results can't be measured for at least a couple of years but they did a fine job of addressing their needs. EXCEPT for that OL eatin' DT that I perceive as a need but they do not. They addressed their needs.

Good post Ksk. I agree with letting the loyalty door close when players aren't productive at a reasonable salary. It's simply good business.

Now if only they'd dump Garrett, they'd really be on to something. I'd replace him with Richard right now, without a second thought.

We tried. He had negative value due to big salary.

All the signs point toward Son hiring good football minds like he said he would, and listening to them.

I wonder if twill gets cut?

I don’t think cutting him this season is prudent. I’m
Interested to see what he brings to the table now with Dez gone. Honestly, Williams frustrates the hell out of me sometimes with his inconsistency and body catching. But he is a hard worker and has made some really big plays for the team.

IMO they still need him right now and he helps the team more than he hurts it.

If Cedrick Wilson can play right now, Twill could get cut. It seriously depends on how the rooks and Hearns and Thompson and Tavon play.

I know Williams can be disappointing at times. But I highly highly doubt a rookie 6th rounder is going to be a better receiver this year than Williams.

Well said. I didn't like the Dez cut at first because I didn't want to jump into the overpriced WR market, but with the rest of the league unwilling to even pay Dez the minimum salary, maybe the FO was on to something.

Dez had 69 catches for 838 yards last year. I bet Allen Hurns can duplicate that on nearly a third of the salary.
