We are going to have a tough time stopping the run

I just can't take anyone with Rowdy as an avatar seriously, I just roll my eyes whenever they post.

Anyway, I think you should worry more about the pass. I think the DL will be fine against the run.

I agree, I think we're gonna have a heck of a time with the run all year.

If I was the Giants' brainstrust, I'd be running at Selvie early to see if that side of the dline will hold its weight. I don't worry about the pass defense as much (except for general first game issues). But having an obvious weak point to attack would allow the Giants offense a lot more flexibility.

Just so everyone knows, if the defense is going to get run over just because Spencer and Bass are out, they weren't going to stop it much at all to begin with.

I am more concerned with our ability to stop the pass.

This.

Run all you like. It's not 1995. Running is still important but it's not nearly as important as being effective passing.

Spencer is our best run defender as a defensive lineman. And without Bass, having only 3 healthy, undersized DTs to rotate will take its toll over the course of a game. So, with all due respect, these are huge losses in our ability to stop the run.

You could argue that it's hardly important at all. Last season, the team that ran the ball more effectively went 130-125-1 -- a winning percentage of .510, which is a virtual coin flip.

Teams that passed more effectively went 203-52-1, a winning percentage of .795. And that hardly mattered whether they were also better at rushing (.800 winning percentage) or worse at rushing (.783 winning percentage).

I'm concerned about stopping the run and the pass the Cowboys had issues containing both last season. They ranked 19th against the pass and 22nd vs the run. Not being able to stop the run is what helped cost them the season finale in 2012. You have to stop the run first or your defense will be on the field all day.

We have no idea who our best DL run defender is. Ware and Spencer are transitioning and it's not just plug and play. We haven't seen Spencer do anything in pre-season. Meanwhile Selvie has come in and done a good job filling in and Hayden has really opened eyes in place of Rat.

By design, this defense is going to give up yards - it's a bend don't break system. But I think anyone suggesting glaring weaknesses is playing chicken little.

Again, if one player is the downfall of our run defense, it wasn't very good to begin with.

People need to look more into the Tampa 2.

Neither Chicago or Seattle were particularly effective against the run. Yet both teams were in the top 5 in least rushing attempts on their defenses.

The reality is that it's not that easy to run in the NFL. Even if you have some degree of success, it's difficult to score just off of running the ball, and when you can't score points, you can't keep running.

If our offense does its part, teams won't run on us for very long.

I usually look at avatars and not names. At times I think they're all one person if they're posting similar things.

Just as one player is the downfall of our offense - Romo. :)

I don't think it's anywhere near that extent. The defense has looked pretty good without Spencer, the offense likely wouldn't do anything without Romo.

I don't see the run defense being made or broken based on Spencer's presence. Carter and Lee both arrive to the play quickly. Carter because of his speed and Lee because he can diagnose the play in a hurry. Spencer's loss, while largely just based on his performance as an OLB, definitely weakens the line but it wont cripple the whole defense.

[quI am more concerned with not being able ote="rpatricc, post: 5167058, member: 7476"]Without Spencer. I think not having Ratliff hurts the inside pass rush, but Hayden will be fine on run downs. But Spencer sets that strong side edge as good as anyone in the league. It is going to be a long night of watching David Wilson bite off chunks of yardage, I fear.[/quote]

I am much more concerned with mot scoring enough points in games. Garrett has enough coaches on his offensive staff to help with game decisions.

I felt our biggest problems last year other than too many injuries was Redzone play calling. With Callahan caling it..I see that being solved.

We will see.
